Utica pliers

Customer brought these to me. Looked on alloy artifacts, but no pics or info there.
Looked similar to a pair of pliers a plumber would use. They were found under a pipeline to a house that had not been replaced since the 40's or 50's

that is what we thought, but it has another area of teeth behind the square part for the burner...

Kinda of weird, I have a similar set that I was just using yesterday (see pic below), I also have an old pair of Knipex that are very similar, don't know what their intended purpose was though. The pair you posted a picture of are interesting because it looks like a multi-tool with a part for grabbing square bolts, the tip looks like maybe a hose clamp plier or maybe for twisting wires or spring tool, then two different size pliers. Very interesting, add me to the list of people wanting to know, specialized or a generic muti-plier.

I do know Utica made a lot of tools for military applications so maybe that was it's original purpose.

Hows that for no help at all.

Many of those old gas valves were square, might be.

Just want to show this Vaughan & Bushnell MFG pliers that I have:

I notice 4 things;

Teeth to grip larger round thing.
V for a square thing.
Teeth to grip a smaller round thing.
Tip of jaws have something going on, maybe another square grabber?

I have a few of those. I know they were used mostly for plumbing with brass pipe. My grandfather had a bunch.

That Vaughan has a pry bar on the end of one of the handles like my Pexto. My Pexto also has third set of teeth.

Still do not know why it is called gas and burner, or what you would use it on. Brass plumbing pipe.

I think the handle end was used to adjust valves...but it could be used as a pry bar if ya had to.

I have this set and also a smaller set (6") which are both unmarked for mfgr. name, but I use them both daily. Great for pipe, round objects etc.. Nobody makes new ones like these that I have seen, must be at least 50 years old and still going strong!
