I've used a Stanley 99e for decades. Still do for most jobs.

For heavier-duty work (carpet, etc) it's Stanley 10-819

Wholeheartedly agree. I've used the 99e since a boy and it just feels right and stores in an apron well. As I've gotten older the 10-819 has been much easier to hold on to with the curved body and kick at the end. Makes rugged cuts much easier. I also like the blade storage and quick lock dial that makes sure the blade will not retract in use.

The 10-819 was sold for only a short time in the US from what I can determine. The last one I got was through Amazon from the UK. Still worth it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the good old Stanley 99E.

This. Iove mine. Ill note my work issues us these with self retract blades (whichever the model # is) so i bought a regular one the correct color as self retract is just awful

If I was a carpet guy would use a quick change, roofing too but we use these all over the place, there might be better but we settle on the 99e and toss anything isn't Stanley or fixxed in the scrap.

Most of the problems with knives like this, fail or retract are due to the wrong blade. Ace hwd, do it best are not the same. It is an automatic motion for me to retract after every cut.

I know everyone will laugh at me but I love these .69 cent ones from Harbor Freight I have a ton of these things floating around. Have them in the box, cart everywhere at home too. I carry one in my pocket at work too comes in handy and cuts boxes and packages like I need. Best money ever spent haha.

Sheffield folder is on my kitchen counter and on my workbench. But when I need a hook blade, like roofing, I use the cheap bent style that keeps your knuckles off the shingle.

I have probably 30+ in a drawer because I keep getting them onesie twosie with other lots, I like the fixed blade ones, most often the 199 since I often use them with the blowtorch.
