Utilizing extra space in small garages...make a loft!

My attached garage is 19x20 measured inside. The builders claimed this was a two car garage...I think he meant 2 MGB's or something. The garage queen is a '70 Charger...measures about 18' from bumper to bumper, so my hip rubs the front bumper as I go to the other side of the garage. In addition to my garage queen, I have a TON more **** that I can never seem to talk myself into selling. :D
I'm pretty embarrassed to show you guys my pit of a garage, but I know there's others out there like me, so maybe it's not so bad??:lol2:

Last year, board member 428 (where's that guy been, anyway?) planted an idea in my head for a way of regaining control of my hopeless PIT of a garage in this thread; http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5397&page=2
Hmmm...not a bad idea! I do have a 10' ceiling in there, I bet I could use more of that space.:headscrat

I wanted to make room for another vehicle in there, if possible & still have storage room. I decided to move the white storage shelves to an unfinished room in my basement, to store some of the less bulky stuff.
Started unloading the upper shelves first.

Then I attached 2x8's @ 16"oc, with the bottom of the boards being exactly 3" above my head as I walked under...anything above that was storage space. :D The left side is anchored to the existing house wall, the right side to a 2x10 countersunk into two 4x4's & anchored at the back wall.

Due to space problems, I had to work around the shelves until I could slap a partial floor above.

Finished loft floor. The end board appears bowed, it's not really. Dumb camera.:(

The nice big hood on the Charger sure is a tempting spot to lay stuff sometimes...ok, a LOT of times. :headshake

Sometimes were worse than others.:wtf:

A few months later, I decided I wanted more of the upper area available for storage, so I attached another narrower loft shelf along the back wall, with part of the front end being supported from the other loft shelf.

I don't plan on putting much weight up there, but there was a little more flex than I wanted with my body weight up there, so I attached a brace.
The middle vertical 2x4 is attached to a metal strap at the top, slipped though slits in the sheetrock & anchored to a 6' long 4x4 spanning a few rafters, to eliminate loft/shelf flex.
When I sell the place, I can unscrew all my loft stuff, putty over the slits & screw holes & the sheetrock will look normal once again. :)

That's a sandblast cabinet up there (no room to use it, yet)...if I could figure out how to get that cherry picker off the floor, I'd be all over it!

I left a 3' area open in the middle, partly to get the lawnmower from underfoot. :D

This end attaches to the outer wall & also absorbed a pre-existing shelf I put up a few years prior, the end of which is visible on the right.
I also hung one of my 8' flourescent lights underneath...making sure to leave a space for heat ventilation from the light ballast.

It got dark under the larger loft in a hurry, once the floor was laid on. I had some small 4' florescent I'd been hanging onto for "some day", so I decided this was the perfect use for 'em! :D
Once the Exploder is out, it will be well lit enough to work on car parts under there.

Now I'm hanging some pegboard on the outer (unfinished) wall. :)

Thats quite a transformation. The loft looks good. Have you considered adding a shed as well to move some more stuff out of the garage altogether?

Cheers!

WOW!!! That looks great.

When I started using the running boards on my 31 Chev as shelves I said to myself, "The End!!!" Just lucky I had the where with all to build a larger shop.
When that gets full I'm calling you for advice...

Thanks for the pics.

Its great storage, but it can be a black hole, MUCH easier to put stuff into than to get stuff out.

I agree, the larger one over the Exploder could easily be a black hole.
I mainly needed a storage space for things I don't need often...a place to store extra doors, grilles, bumpers, roll bars, little compressor that needs fixing, etc. Things that are too heavy to put in the rafters & too bulky to stick elsewhere.
It also opened up a lot of dead floor space when I stuffed that sand blaster up there.:) That took about 1/4 of that loft by itself.

Shocksystems, I plan on making a backyard shed for the yard tools next summer. I'm gonna go to Lowes, measure & photograph my favorite shed they display in their parking lot, then go build it myself.:bounce:

Don T, I hope to sell this place one day & find a place that I can build a 40x80 garage without ruffling anyone's feathers. Just gotta find it in my price range...not easily done.:(

Locoman, thanks for your constructive criticism, but it ain't happenin'.:boxer:

Wow that 50 pounds of "stuff" in a 5 pound bag. I feel your pain of not having a garage/shop space large enough...I have my more valuable "stuff" in my family room that was previously a garage, converted by previous home owner. You sure no how to make the most of your space.

How did you get the air-compresor up and down? Is there a fork-lift around not being shown???Or are your just freakishly strong?

one of my ex neighbors had a loft setup in his garage much like yours...
one night i heard a LOUD crash... followed by a phonecall a few minutes later:
"hey dude, what's up? you got a few moments? i'm trapped in my truck, guess i had a few too many and kinda forgot about the loft in the garage when i pulled in. do you have any beer?"

dead serious.

i'm trying to deal with a 10x17', 94 year old carriage house for a metal shop and to build a car in (fenderless rod, so nowhere near the size of your charger)....
i'm thinking of LIFTING the building to gain more space, vertically, for storage. (can't expand the width, can only go a few feet longer in length)... plus using the basement and under the deck for storing larger things...

Definitely not freakishly strong. In the first pic, you can see the compressor already sitting on a storage tower type deal that I had it on previously. I scooted the tower over to the loft & tied a leg to the loft. Then I sorta rolled it onto the loft, wasn't bad.
I had my Son help me stuff the sand blaster up, that was harder to do than the compressor.:)

Daddylama, there's a thread somewhere here, done by a guy who raised his old garage. It looked like it worked out pretty well for him.

Hey CF, wanna sell those Custom Cab doors I see taking up space in your loft? I have a decent '65 F250 that they will bolt right onto!

Daddylama, I think that we live pretty close to each other here on the Eastside in Portland, Orygun. Nice house, looking good.

That's the last time C F checked this site...not sure he's going to see your request for doors.
