If you don't have one, get one. I brought them up in the shop safety thread, so I thought I would start a thread about them.

These things are so comfy, easy to use, excellent protection, and you can get a tinted lens for plasma/torching.

If you don't have one, get one! I wear mine for grinding, wire wheel duty, any kind of saw, etc. They're so comfy you'll use them all the time. I never used the old cheapy, and as a result, had a few incidents.

I honestly don't remember where I got it from, I just googled and compared prices and shipping. Get one, I probably have mine on my head 50% of the time in the garage now. It's not an inconvenience, so it gets used.

I have one of these - bought it via Airgas. The only downside is that online photos of it make it seem like a more rugged piece than it reall is. It seems to be made of the same flimsy plastic as other face shields, there's just more of it.

BUT what I do like is that it protects the sides of my faces, and not just the very front.

$22.57 via Airgas. I ordered a bunch of things, and they charged me a total of $7 shipping. If you buy just this, it would come out to be ~$30.

It's also ~$30 from an Amazon vendor and probably elsewhere as well. I'd say that it is worth double the price of ordinary face shields such as this MSA version that I think I bought at Lowes.

Don't forget that you're expected to wear goggles/glasses under a faceshield!

Another user here. Picked one up a few years ago. Got turned onto them on another board.

A full face shield is so much better than just simple safety glasses, especially when using things like cutoff wheels - protect your whole face and not just your eyes!

I often wear earmuffs when using my face shield. I have a crappy Lowes $10 face shield, and the earmuffs can't be worn properly with the shield. Does this Uvex allow for earmuff use? What about the MSA posted above?

I checked my facemask, and it's an AO Safety one, not MSA - the products should be very similar, though.

Earmuffs CAN be worn with the MSA-style faceshield, but does require some adjustment since the headbands overlap a bit.

Earmuffs canNOT be worn with the Uvex shield as the cups interfere with the shield being brought to its proper wearing position.

I believe I have the same "crappy $10 Lowes faceshield" and it does allow for earmuffs, so maybe it is highly dependent on the brand/style of products used.

Does it fog up much when using it?. I have a jackson shield and rarely use it do to fogging.

I believe they have two versions - one with an antifog coating at an additional cost.

Mine's not the anti-fog, and it gets a small bit every once and a while, but not really in the field of view, anyway.

Got one on Ebay for 40 shipped about a month ago. SOme store in Florida. I have to says it is awesome. I will never own another cheapo. Honestly you cannot even tell you are wearing one. I first saw it in a sears catalog and figured I would try it.

$34.28 at airgas. With $7 shipping, it's $41 not including tax. $40 shipped isn't too bad but for the extra few dollars, I'd rather shop at a reputable vendor than a reputable ebayer.

The instructions recommend using goggles with the face shield. Seems like overkill for most purposes to me. Is it only for when light dust is flying around and can get inside the shield from the back/bottom?

Who wears goggles/glasses with the shield and why (besides perscription)?

I have been making a habit of wearing safety glasses when doing work in the garage and yard. If the job requires a face shield, I'll put it on in addition to the safety glasses I'm currently wearing.

From a safety standpoint, safety glasses/goggles are designed to protect your eyes from projectiles/impact. I don't think most face shields are designed as an eye protection substitute.

Also, Its nice to have separate eyewear protection for the times you forget to flip the face shield down.

I spent several hours in the Uvex Bionic recently cutting up some trees with a chain saw. It was comfortable and didn't fog up during use.

I remember the tan lines, welding things up just closing my eyes, or holding something (bare hand of course) with eyes shut whilst someone else welded it

and the clenchign of the teeth as a bit of grinder wheel hit your hand/face

I love mine, I had one for a few years now and its one of the tools I own (yes it a tool, goes everywhere my grinder goes). Mine has taken a lot of abuse and has not broke yet.
I have repalced the glass a few time but thats the cheap part.

Still love it. I'm on the original lens, but it's time for a new one now. I had a 4.5" cutoff wheel blow up and hit the shield directly in front of my right eye and down at my neck over thanksgiving. The only damage I suffered was to my boxers. The lens is definitely fubar where the pieces hit, but it didn't break. If it means gouges in the lens and having to replace it after a wheel blows up, I'm good with that.

My dad freaked out when it went, he thought he was dragging me to the ER. He was glad we were using the shield rather than the safety goggles he wanted to use (my garage - my rules).

I got the safety glasses the wife brought home from the factory so their not cheap ones but I still hate wearing them.
I have learned my lesson, twice now I have had to go to the eye doctor and have steel removed from my left eye.
First time it was stainless so he said that was good because it didn't rust.
Second one was black iron pipe and I went to the doc right away and it still rusted in my eye. Once he got the steel out he had to drill the rust out of my eye.

Learned my lesson. Those look like something I would wear.
