Can anyone recommend a vacuum pump and hvac gauge set that isn’t complete garbage but won’t break the bank either? I’d only use it 2 or 3 times a year and mostly for pm on an air ride system. Also, I’m not a huge fan of anything from China but I also understand this is the world we live in.

If you should check your local CL's you will find some, here where I'm at they are there all time used mostly. But you may also check local Pawn Shops which is kinda on high end of pricing or post a WTB on CL's. Yellow Jacket is most common and maybe Fast-Vac is another brand. But make sure the gages will work with the freon you will be using and hoses don't leak. Most HVAC supply houses will sell tools to home owners but not parts

kinda pricey for seldom use.
a quality 2 stage pump and a set of analog gages with 60'' hoses should set you back at least 4 bills.
the price can easily top 1k

JB is a good brand, last I recall was US made but not cheap. Stay away from Mastercool and Harbor Freight, they are not quality.
Make sure you change the oil regularly.
Vacuum pump oil is hydroscopic and soaks up moisture from the air like a sponge.
Pawn shops can be a bargain also.
Over the summer I picked up a Ritchie 2 stage pump. Sticker price was $50 and it worked well I offered $40 and they accepted.
I felt kinda slimy for a second, but quickly recovered.
Here in Houston every Pawn shop has vacuum pumps , but prices are all over the place!

for what you do... HF 3cfm one is fine. I have the HF 2.5 and 3 cfm one for years, works fine for me. still works. Also have a 1HP or 2HP Gast intended for vacuum bagging. if you wanted some industrial vacuum pumps.

if you wanted name brand, Yellow Jacket, JB , ROBINAIR are all good brands for HVAC techs, just $$$$$, if you think it's worth your $$$ go get one, they still have models made in the USofA.
