Anyone vacuum their shop floors? Any specialty vacuums out there for doing so? I broomed out my garage the other day and i just wasnt happy with it so i swiped the wifes plastic extention and foot off of her kirby and stuck it on my shop vac. That worked like a dream and got up all the fine dust and dirt that a broom didnt get.

I usually sweep the dust into a manageable pile, then vacuum that up.

What I need is big-***-broom now with the new 40'x40' shop. Anyone have recommends for such?

I use a shop-vac with the wide attachment on it once every couple years. That's about as often as you can even see the floor to vacuum it...

Yes, I vacuum the garage whenever it needs it. I recently bought a Stihl shop vac, which is made in Hungary by Nilfisk-Alto. It's quiet and easy to use. It makes cleaning up the garage quite easy.

Does that vac have an exhaust port? The shop-vac brand I had would exhaust in 3 areas, sometimes blowing dust away from where I wanted to vacuum!

Yes, it has a port on the back. It's sort of a wide, thin port, so it doesn't seem to make a strong direct blast that blows dust around. Or at least I haven't noticed that issue.

I do not like the dust which sweeping creates so I am a big time vacuum user and mine is just a cheapo big box store one but I have just a very small one car garage area to deal with and do woodworking in there.

I just grab the leaf blower and blast the walls and floor. Acouple of minutes later I have dusted and swept the floor. Turn on the fans and let the dust fly out.

I use a 18 volt cordless leaf blower, it's handy and works well. You could use the blowing outlet of the shop vac to blow dust out the door. I do use a shop vac for cobwebs etc.

I have a (now discontinued) Roomba Dirt Dog:

I used the shopvac for the worst of it. I run this every couple of weeks. Amazing how much dirt sand it picks up. Had it 4 years. Push a button, walk away. Empty it when it's done. Cleans under the workbenches, toolboxes, etc.

i dont sweep my shop floors but for my woodworking and other stuff i use my shop vac with a dust deputy. http://www.oneida-air.com/category.asp?Id={CC6B6F2A-E3D7-4F18-A53C-B5C357DFE131}

If i was going to use my shop vac regularly to clean my shop floors thats what i would do. the dust deputy is a small 2 stage filter system that you can add on to the shop vac. it will save you a ton of filters. i love mine and its really cool to watch stuff get spiraled down in the clear seperation chamber. and the first time i used it. I thought it was sweet that all the dust was in the dust deputy and not in my shop vac. i thought for sure some would get past.

Good luck tho

I've got several commercial size entry mats, so I have to vacuum about every other night. A 5 gallon craftsman, mounted to the wall with about 15ft of hose works perfectly.

I don't sweep either, too much dust. It takes me about 15 minutes to do my 2-car garage with the shop-vac and standard hose attachment.

I like the vacuum because I can get underneath and behind things I would never be able to access with a broom. Helps me keep the creepy-crawlies at bay.

I scored an few year old cyclone style house vac to clean my 2 car garage. I dont want the dust up in the air. I will usualy use a broom to collect the big stuff and dust pan that up, but then vacuum the floor with the old house vac. I can say I have gotten some odd looks from the neighbors.

I use a 2-cycle leaf blower....

open the overhead doors at each end of the shop and blast away. The Oklahoma wind carries it all to the next county.

I either vacuum or blow compressed air with my 36" Long John:

Usually piles of sawdust/swarf get the vac. For dusting/cleanout I like to open the garage door and "wrangle" the dust out with the air gun. It makes a big difference.

I scored a large air handler blower for free. One of these days I'll make one of those air recirculator filters and just turn it on for an hour or so after blowing the dust in the air.

Shop Vac with floor attachment for me. I have never found a dust broom that didn't "carry" the dust back unless you banged it on the floor first. Terribly annoying and a big waste of time. Grab the Sho Vac and start cleaning. In a few minutes all done.

I use one of these in the shop, as well as the decks, patio, and driveway.
