Value 4-5 inch vise?

If you had to buy a simple 4 to 5 inch vise today that would be a good value and not super expensive, what would you get? I have a super old 6 inch vise That is like a battle Tank, I will not be getting rid of this one I just want some thing a little bit smaller that I can place somewhere else.

Any solid ductile iron vise will work. I prefer a fixed base over a swivel base, but both have their benefits.

I set up an old Wilton that my dad must have bought new in the seventies in my small garage at the winter house in Tucson.

It had been sitting on a shelf for years, ever since we cleared out the folks house.

I always considered it a toy, at, I think, 4”, but or the right application, it’s actually quite useful, especially if you are space constrained.

Instead of useless, I now consider it “cute”.

Won’t be pressing u joints or beating metal on it, though.

Best value is to find a good old Reed, Parker, Wilton, Prentiss, columbian which is still in decent shape.

I have a newer Irwin which isn't bad, but it can't hold a candle to the old ones.

I’d hit a few estate sales and look in the garage. Quite often heirs overlook and forget to price the vise bolted to the old bench in a corner but are open to offers if you have cash and remove it. The same goes for wall hangers, clocks, etc, when they’re selling the house everything is usually for sale. Some of my best scores were items that buyers mistook as not for sale and sellers forgot to list.

Beautiful vises, but I think they are much more expensive than the OP is looking for. I vote for a vintage Morgan Chicago, as they are plentiful (in the Chicago area, as least) and sell for a fraction of Wiltons, Reeds, Starrets, or Parkers.
