Value of older Matco multimeter

Dad has a wild hair to sell his ET-710. I'm not sure if he has a timing light with it or what. It does have an amp shunt, which I'm not familiar with other than .

Well-respected garage owner guy offered $100 for part of it all, $125 with something included.

Are the needle meters worth something these days? This one is probably 70s, mabye 80s vintage.

I may double check to see if I even have a dwell meter before he sells it.

But mostly, I'm wanting him to get good $.

More for nostalgia/old timers that don't like digital displays I'd think. I've never heard anything to the tune of them being more functional than modern units, no less likely to fail at any given time given the age of the components. More likely to be out of calibration too. I'm not an expert or collecter though.

Needle mulimeters are still produced by some companies. Most are either incredibly inexpensive, or they're top of the line modes that can cost as much as a Fluke made multimeter. I think some people may prefer to reed measurements off a dial. The needle style can also show fluctuations in AC current which you otherwise might need a True RMS multimeter to read. Triplett and a few other companies still produce high end analog multimeters, but I'm not sure they're considered as well made as the older ones. Just judging by Ebay there is a collectors market for some of the older meters. The older meters were top of the line equipment in their day so unless parts or materials in them can go bad they still would be useful.

If someone offered $100, take it!

I have an old Mac ET-920 that I bought back in the 1980's at a pawn shop for around $60 that does basically the same stuff that Matco does. Not much use for it these days except on old musclecars, but it's not worth it to me to sell it.

back around '84-'85 the digital readout models came out.

for someone that wants/needs an amp shunt, and ability to read tach/dwell, they are good meters.
mine still works.

as mentioned, if somebody offered $100 for it, and i didnt need it, i'd probably sell .
