I have a chance to get a pretty good shape Starrett Athol 4" swivel base vice for 60. I have been looking for an older 4" and this one is in good shape, should I grab it?

I would too. Those are gnarly. Lots of chunk-a-metal there. Strong. And they look nice as well.

If you can get a photo, let us see it. Starrett did have a line of vises that were cheap. The pipe jaw was just too jagged sides of metal that were below the jaws. Some don't mention COO on them also.

It's being held til tomorrow at the store, but it is stamped with an MA adress I remember. The pipe jaws below are not replaceable but good shape, the jaws above are replaceable and I'd say 80+%.

Anyone know if you can still get jaw inserts for them?

Looks just like this one in the first pic, but WAY better shape with original I assume red paint, also in good shape.

Well, got it today. Really impressed with how wide the mouth of this vise it, seems like it opens wider than most 4". It's a 014 model according to the base and side. Now, to use as is or "restore".....

Here it is beside it's new big brother Wilton......

I personally would just throw some oil on the slide bolt the vise down and go to work. It's going to get dirty from being used any how. Plus the paint is in good shape and the vise doesn't look beat half to death it's in very good condition. And great price.

Just picked up a Starrett 014 over the weekend from my regular Flea Mkt source as he generally knows what I'm looking for. He said that he scored it for $50 and flipped it over to me for $65 (so like a $15 finder's fee). I look to stay mostly in the 3 -4 inch range and definitely under $100 for my vise hobby, but hey that's just me. :) He did have a nice Charles Parker 104 too but for much, much more than I was willing to pay.
