Anyone have a reccommend on a good quality valve spring conpressor for car engines? So far, I've always borrowed my friend's "C Clamp" style compressor that wraps around the head... it's awkward and finnicky, I'd like to buy one that works better and isn't a huge unwieldy pain.

Mostly working on Subaru engines, EA82 and EJ22. The valves on EJ22s are fairly close together, if that makes a difference.

If you're working on 4 valve engines with smaller valves, you might be happier with a motorcycle style spring compressor.

I had a thread on here a while ago about valve spring compressors. This one was recommended, http://www.tooltopia.com/schley-91400b.aspx. I never did end up getting one yet but I really liked how this one the handle and the actual compressor can be at different points on the bar since the whole bar twists. That way you can compress a valve back by the firewall and have the handle at the front of the engine where it has more clearance.

Quick question, is there actually a dedicated "motorcycle style" valve spring compressor? I'm actually currently looking to purchase a valve spring compressor but was planning to get a quality tool that I could use for both motorcycle & car engine valves (ideally for both two valve and four valve cylinder application).

For valve spring compressors, I find this quite good. Its snap on GA317.
Here is the link.

Also recommended is cam operated snap on VST100.

This is a youtube video of snap on GA317.

Hope the suggestion helps. Price quoted for both on site is $45 and $50 for GA317 and VST100 respectively.

Same tool as the LISLE, also only compatible with a limited number of heads due to size and taper of magnetic portion of tool. I've had one sitting in my toolbox for years unused because of the design flaws. Plus trying doing a 40 valve engine with one of those and let me know how your forearm feels.
