Guys,

Finally finished the cabinetry in our remodeled bathroom. House is a 1918 farmhouse, and I’m partial to Arts and Crafts style as you’ll see. The professionals handled drywall, plumbing, electrical, marble, flooring…but I did the woodworking part myself. Got some head scratches from the pros about my “convertible vanity”…but I stuck with the idea of making it possible to switch it up for good wheelchair access if we ever need it as this is the only downstairs bathroom.

Anyway, the face frame and floor of the cabinet are locked in by keyed pins. Using a key, the 2 pins can be disengaged and the face and floor moved to the basement as needed.

Yes. have blocking everywhere. We installed all the grab bars in the shower and bought 2 extra, including 1 to go on the kneewall adjacent to the toilet, but decided to hold off installing that one until needed. This picture shows the ones in the shower on the back and in front of the window. This was taken while we were waiting (6 weeks) for glass to be installed.

This shows it better. Found it earlier in my phone. I fabricated the steel support for the knee wall myself. It bolts to the framing as shown, goes through the subfloor, tees, within the floor joist space and is bolted firmly to floor joists on either side (joists run left to right in this picture). Concern was to make the knee wall rigid enough on the left side (as shown) so the marble would be properly supported.

Anyway...blocking is just below the level of the electrical work box.

Not really. This is a vinyl replacement window the previous owners of the house installed circa 1990ish. after all the wood trim, lath and plaster was removed, the contractor installed new blocking, insulation and drywall. The marble guy formed a one piece surround/ trim from cultured marble, then it was sealed to and around the window as shown in the finished picture. The window is still technically operable, but is now behind the grab bar.

The window gave a nice clear view of anyone using the shower from the backyard. So, we bought a roll of privacy film and used that to cover the glass.

I finished it with a water based grain filler then tung oil.

Zim, it involves the use of ammonia and high tannin woods like oak. Here's a video on it. It was used extensively on the Stickley style furniture years ago.
