I have a 24x24 detached and am insulating it this spring. I keep reading different opinions about putting vapor barrier on the ceiling. Just wondering what you guys think. Is it necessary?

where are you located?
normally the vapour barrier goes on walls & ceiling on the inside of the insulation .
vapour barrier keeps the moisture from getting in the insulation .

east coast of canada.

just wondering if its necessary on the ceiling as the attic space has sufficient ventilation and its a detached garage. Only heated with a space heater when I'm working out there.

You always need a vapor barrier on the warm side of the insulation. It prevents warm, moist air from hitting cold, dry air and condensing, releasing moisture.

In Canada the vapor barrier will always go on the interior side of the insulation.

If you are insulating then you will have warm and cold air (even if you don't add a heat source) so you need to add a vapor barrier.
