There always are so many VB questions on the forum
The new issue of Fine Homebuilding (March) devotes a few pages to what people are now calling "Control Layers" ... a term I encountered a few years back when I was researching Zinc for the roof of my current project.
The article touches on wall assemblies and how they must breath to both the inside and outside .... including when the exterior sheathing becomes the water and rain barrier.
It's only showing what we all call a VB on the one assembly -- kraft on the fiberglass batts. Kraft is really a retarder ... not a barrier. I'm glad they also point out the VB properties of latex paint ... no plastic shown .. only mentioned to point out it's a class 1.
I like that they also point out (briefly) the many problems with typical house wraps .. IMO ...mostly marketing. Also hit on a window flashing issue with the product. It's so over rated
Structures have to breath and drain .. all buildings can get wet in driving rain ..as long as they drain and dry there will not be a problem.
Whats old is new .. as always. Along this line they spotlight a product that I did not know about. Boral TruExterior skirt board. It replicates a skirt board that I first encountered when I redid a 1810 federal in Philadelphia .. The design works great with Hardie. I always use the detail and up to now have to make mine ... but now I will buy this .. or at least get some and see if I like. I have been impressed with Boral .... it's a bit heavy.
Now maybe they will do an issue with sealed attics and crawlspaces
