I am looking for a variable speed polisher to wax/polish cars etc. I currently have a round orbital polisher I have had for 15 years called a Wax master 3000 or something like that. I am looking for a variable speed one that has the pistol grip type with trigger. I don't know much about them and would like one that won't break the bank but will perform well. Any suggestions?

Well, here is my suggestion.... all three machines below are made by Porter-Cable and are basically the same thing just different models. I know its not a pistol grip but its the "goto" machine for enthusiast detailers and even pro detailers. They are going to cost a little more but they are quality machines.

- Meguiars G100A Polisher - Lifetime warranty, 5 ounce counter weight, one backing plate and one pad is included - Meguiars G-100A

- Porter Cable 7336 (considered a sander) - one year warranty, 6 ounce counter weight and you will have to buy the Meguiars DA Velcro Buffing System(contains: one backing plate, two soft buff polishing pads and one soft buff finishing pad)

The Porter-Cable 7336 can also be found at Lowes for $90-$100

- Porter Cable 7424 (considered a polisher) - one year warranty, 5 ounce counter weight and you will have to buy the Meguiars DA Velcro Buffing System(contains: one backing plate, two soft buff polishing pads and one soft buff finishing pad)

All three machines(the power unit itself)are basically the same. You need to get Meguiars brand pads if you go with either Porter-Cable (7424/7336) version, do not use the included white pad.

The two different counter weights won't make a difference in the operation of the machines.

For the Meguiars DA Velcro Buffing System you will have to call their 800# as they are not online right now, the "system" runs around $32.00

Here is a great site to look over for more info: Meguiars Online

Just my .02, hope it helps.

I have a Porter Cable that I bought from Griot's a few years back. Excellent product: metal construction and made in the USA. It does it's job extremely well and is very comfortable to use. They recently replaced it with a "new and improved" model in their catalog that I was able to see when I visited their showroom a few weeks ago. It's labelled as a Griot's product and has an over-the-top style of handle that looks like it would be more comfortable than the PC, but it is made primarily of plastic and has the dreaded gold sticker that says "Made in Taiwan".

Looks like I'll be on the lookout for a Porter cable on ebay or pawn shops. The polisher is for doing my families cars I don't think I want to spend upwards $150 for my Jeep CJ7. I see Milwaukee has one maybe I can get lucky and find one cheap.
