An old Jorgensen Steel Handbook is handy if you can find one. I'm sure they probably show up on Ebay.

My grandpa received his degree in metallurgy through national correspondence. I know this isn't helpful to you, but I have been reading all of the books that were issued to him through his coarse work an they are outstanding! I wish I could find a way to share them. He is still alive and kicking at the age of 87. I have an image if his electric arc furnace hanging in my office. While his physical abilities are fading he is still as sharp as ever. Good luck in your search, I requested the documents from him in my search for more knowledge and I value them dearly.

I like the book, "Engineer to Win" by Carroll Smith. I got it about the same time I was taking a materials class in college, and it is nearly the same material, presented in plain English without much math. It is not only a description of material properties, but why you do or don't want to use a particular material for a part on a racecar.

There is also a bunch of information in it about fasteners and plumbing. Well worth the $25.
