Vaughan Hammer Question

Does anyone know why some of the Vaughan hammer heads I have are blue, while others are black?

The attached picture shows a 12oz ball peen that arrived today from Tool Barn with blue paint, where the other 3 I bought at HD during a close out years ago that have black on the ball peens, but blue on the tack.

I also received a 10 and 16oz rip today as well that are blue.

Is there a different grade metal in the heads? Maybe one is a homeowner version? The blue ones had a pro's choice/contractor label on the handles.

There is no noticeable difference in quality- they are all excellent.

I don't think there's a quality difference. On Vaughn's own website they show some hammer series, such as the one piece "solid steel" drilling hammers, where most of the hammers are painted blue, with one or two models with a black finish.

I sort of presumed Vaughan decided at some point to switch to a blue color scheme, and were just switching colors on new batches as they were made, rather than clearancing or repainting all the older stock.

Some of the hammers Vaughan makes private label, such as the hammers for Craftsman usually come with a black finish. Another possibility is they made a larger batch than were needed and just decided to label them as Vaughan and not refinish them.

Vaughan does sell their seconds painted a blue color, but those should e clearly labelled Grayvik.

Vaughn makes Craftsman hammers with black paint but their own Vaughn brand with blue. Food for thought.

I was wondering the exact question as the OP posted, as I'm considering getting a couple bigger sizes than I already have, buying them brand new - the blue headed current versions with wood handles.

But my black headed Vaughans are even older I believe. On the flat face end, on the round part, they also have machined circles around the entire length. As if older versions never buffed out/finished the circles off, but the newer versions have the circles it finished/smoothed off.

I was wondering too...any differences in quality of old to new. Although I love my vintage and NOS stuff, I DO like supporting them and want to buy new hammers and keep them made in USA.

All the Vaughan ones I have are blue all the Craftsman Vaughans are black with a stained handle. All seem to be the same quality.

Not always. I have one in grey. They might just use whatever paint they have handy or can get cheapest.

That's not a ball peen which is why it's not blue.

The one next to it isn't a ball peen and it is blue. Do you mean that the ball peens are only blue and the rest can be different colors? I don't have any of those so I have no idea.

Older ball peens were black and new vaughan second's are blue. That's from my knowledge.
