I was in Lowes a few days ago and noticed some Vaughan hammers on the wall.

I had never heard of them before and was surprised to see that they were made in the USA.

Just wondering anyone has any reviews of their products.

The prices seem reasonable for a USA tool and I am tempted to pick a few up.

If you need hammers go get some. They are also the OEM for craftsman. Quality stuff.

I have several Cman hammers and can't complain about any of them. I just picked up a 16oz ball pein for $9.99 at Sears the other day.

I don't think you can go wrong with Vaughan hammers.

My dad has owned a construction business for 40 years and has used only Vaughan hammers the entire time, if you ask me they are the best hammers for their price point.

Vaughan hammers are the most well balanced and right feeling in my hands than any other brand and they are priced the same as they were 20 years ago.

I've used a 32oz Vaughan Ball Peen hammer as an industrial maintenance mechanic for 8 years. Excellent hammer.

I have quite a few Vaughan hammers. They are great quality and have never let me down. Good sturdy handles.

Strong.
Balanced.
A value.

However, I am concerned about their quality declining.

Some of the newer production is no longer stamped with the company name. It is now "painted".
While being a small change, it does not impress. No pun intended.

Also, the earlier forgings were finished better.
I.E. Sharp edges and ridges were ground smooth.
Also, polished vs. lacquered.

You can see both of these points illustrated below...

I didn't look at the claw hammers in store but I'm guessing it's laser etched into the side of the head. Slightly more robust than paint but definitely cheap looking. Agree on other points.

Epstein's Vaughn / Grayvik Deal

Just got this in this afternoon. Thought I would give you guys a heads up. I haven't put anything online yet, but it should all go up tomorrow afternoon. This deal is 18 pallets of mostly Grayvik merchandise: lots of different types of hammers, pry bars and nail pullers. There is some Vaughn name brand stuff in there to, and we got a small quantity of Diamond cross pein hammers!

This is a regular once a year deal, so don't worry about Vaughn. Basically, when they aren't satisfied with the finish of a tool, they set it aside. Once a year, when their warehouse gets full they stick a Grayvik sticker on it and sell it to someone like us. I've looked at most of the stuff and the finishes are really nice for seconds. Everything has this shiny clear coat on it, and the wood and fiberglass handles look great.

A little background on Epstein's

If you have just stumbled upon us in this vast world we call the internet, we aren't just another online retailer. What makes us different? Well...

We've been operating out of the same brick and mortar store in downtown Kansas City since 1933.

We are a family owned tool store that specializes in good quality US made hand tools.

We buy large liquidation deals from many US tool manufacturers, so we have killer prices on what we refer to as "closeouts".

We are a wholesaler as well as a retailer, so if you are in the business of selling tools, we have a special dealer program we'd love to tell you about.

We are a small company that likes to talk to our customers, so if you have any questions feel free to pick up the phone and give us a call (or shoot us an email).

We have a box art program where we custom paint a picture of your choice on your box.

We try to keep things in stock, so typically we can ship in 1 to 2 business days. (We do have items marked "special order" that take longer.)

We've been doing this for a while so we know the merchandise that we sell. If you have any questions we have people that can answer them
.

I've had a Vaughn ball peen hammer that I got five or six years ago that has taken all of the abuse I can throw at it. I would highly recommend them.

Vaughan hammers are decent, I have a fair few including their titanium framing hammer. Also some of the Gravik ones from Epstein's.
Estwing's quality has also declined in recent years also, paint instead of polish, rougher finishing in general.

All the ball peens I have are Vaughan, and some are pretty old. Never had one complaint. Wouldn't think twice about buying more if I ever need to.

Well based on all the positive feedback I picked up some of these hammers today at Lowes.

Three ball peens and a framer for 75 bucks with my 5% discount.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I have two sizes of Vaughn rubber tipped hammers.Don't really have to use them a lot but when I do I'm glad they are well made. Have had them over twenty years. Both still in great shape. I think if I ever need new rubber tips I'll be able to find them. Great hammers.
