If you’re worried it’s going to come off. I have two of those hammers in different sizes. They are great. One of them is Vaughn made craftsman branded, and was my dad’s. Dates to late sixties or early seventies. It and a rubber mallet were the only soft faced hammers he had, and it’s had the snot used out of it. My dad used it a lot and, and he gave it to me for Christmas (and bought a replacement) when I got the handle permanently grease stained using it for an engine rebuild. It’s done more since, but it’s bigger brother gets more use.

A similarly sized snapon one gets used most often when I want a soft face hammer. But I am a bit of a weirdo about hammers, and sometimes there’s that one weird hammer that does something perfectly, so I have many. I’d be pretty happy with either of them as the only soft face hammer in a toolkit, either for portable use or as a household kit.

Yeah, I'm worried that it's going to come off. It's good to hear that the original faces stay on well. My other concern is that after a few years I'll want to replace a face, and the replacement that I install won't stay on well.

They’re a press fit. I replaced the red tip on a hammer a few years; then promptly lost the hammer, left it at a job site. Still a bit pissed about it, I don’t often lose tools.

Press fit, although not the best application you can try to use a vise for installation. I have a 6" bullet and even that struggles.
On a related note, in the last week I've purchased one SF12 from Zoro and now two all metal versions from Amazon (fulfilled by Marshalltown Tools). All three hammers have had one or both tips installed crooked from the factory with 1/4"+ gaps, so there is a pretty bad QC issue going on right now IMO. It might be nitpicky but the tips should be flush. I can't get them much better with my vise either.

You might consider emailing that pic to Vaughan/Marshalltown. Just ask them if they know they have QC issues. If they care, you'd be doing them a favor, and they might send you another one. I would be interested in hearing whatever response you might get.

Am I on the cross stitching and quilting forum? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: I thought this was GJ???

We have members that can't finish the installation of a soft mallet face and need a new hammer to replace it?

There's all kinds of people here. Some even cross stitch and quilt. Why is that a problem for you?
