VCT, Epoxy, race deck experience

I notice quite a few questions regarding using vct, epoxy, and race deck. I have had all three and wanted to offer what I have learned along the way.

VCT- I first chose VCT for my home garage and one of my earlier toy garages due to cost difference. If you can drive straight in and never have to turn the front wheels it will work fine. My home garage required some turning of the front wheels and soon VCT was popping everhwere the wheels were turned. My toy garage did not require any wheel turning and even with my 57,000 lb motorhome there was no popping of tiles.

My next toy garage required some turning of wheels and again tiles started popping up. I then decided to epoxy the floor. Removing 3,000 SF of VCT and prepping the floor for epoxy is a major job! I cannot sterss enough how major of a job it is to change this out should you find you made a mistake.

Epoxy - I like this especially where heavy vehicles will be parked. Concrete is guaranteed to crack and I do not like seeing the cracks with epoxy. It is easy to maintain and you can use a large floor scrubber on it. It does show tire marks, but so does vct and race deck probably the least.

Race Deck - I love it! It is great on an old guys knees. It makes the space look very finished and clean. I have no problems with cars popping tiles having had it in place for 6 years in my home garage, but I tried it in my toy garage and the 57,000 lb motorhome did pop the tiles. Solution was to use race deck where the lighter vehicles are stored and epoxy where the heavy vehicles are stored. Race decks covers all cracks in concrete and makes a marginal floor look awesome. All of my cars have battery tenders connected to them. We were getting lots of stactic electricity. Solution was to place rubber mats between race deck and battery tenders. Also, race deck has a great anti static solution that we regularly mop on the floor. Problem eliminated.

Thanks for posting your expeirience. Regarding the race deck, I live in a cold climate with garage that has in floor heat. Does race deck hold up to that well, and how about mud and dirt cleanup? Does it squeegee easily? How about durability to scratching if a heavy metal object was dragged across it? Is it suitable down use with jacks/jack stands?

Maybe I should just search huh?

I have had Race Deck in my garage for ten years. Yes, it will scratch if you drag something heavy across it. My two car garage requires me to turn the wheel as I enter. Ground in tire marks with grit does show and those areas will not stay glossy. No amount of scrubbing has removed the tire marks. However, the overall look is still fine. I'm still looking for a clear coating that can bring back the gloss, but in general I am very pleased.

Don't feel shy, if you have access to instal flooring scale to maintain your floor for long time. This is the best and reliable assistance to decorate your floor plans. By spending little amount on flooring scale you can well plan to your locations and specific garages.

I have had no issues with VCT popping up, even with my grippy tires turning a fair amount. Might be an install issue.

OP, Nice looking place!

Jim

PS Were I to do it again, I would definitely go with Porcelain. No chance of issues then.

Race Deck offers great chemicals that will allow you to obtain any level of gloss without water spots. They work great. Think they are offered through their snap sports division.

Thanks for the info. We obviously all appreciate hearing from experience, especially on such a large scale.
