VCT Flooring?

Hello all, quick question for those that have VCT flooring in their shop.

I am considering it for the not too distant future, but am wondering how it holds up.

Im talking general car/truck work being done on it. Jackstands, floor jacks, the occasional oil spill, engine attached to cherry picker rolling around on it, etc.

I dont do that kind of work in the shop everyday, but often enough. How would this type of floor hold up?

I am going to install VCT in my garage very soon - they tell me its not good for people with "shops" with heavy tools and equipment. For people needing the flooring for "regular use" it works great. They install this type of flooring at supermarkets etc. I have heard that you cannot constantly turn the tires on the floor. Pull your vehicle straight in and out if possible and/or install mats where the tires will hit.

Most guys around here are using armstrong VCT tiles which you can get at home depot although you may have to special order if you want a specific color . VCT is whats on the floor at Wally world and the grocery store to give you an idea of how good it holds up to traffic.

I found this thread in the forum. I plan on copying this guy's idea: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115673

Yeah, thats what I am looking at doing too.

Although it would look great, I am weary of doing a bunch of automotive work on it, I have heard about not turning the tires on it etc.

Seems it could be quite slippery after a spill of antifreeze or oil.

Yes, it would definitely not be good for oil spills etc. If you do VCT you would probably want to put some rubber matting down where you use heavy tools or shop work. I seriously doubt it would work for high traffic/ heavy tool areas where things could be dropped.

The nice thing about VCT is low cost. Those tiles go for .75 each! My 14x20 can be floored for $250.00 - The alternative is RaceDeck type flooring is AMAZING but it costs a ton. IF you got the money for this type of thing check out: http://www.racedeck.com/

Or you can do Porcelain tiles for the same price, and you can turn, spill and drag whatever you want.
