VCT Question from the newbie.....

Did the VCT thing about 3 years ago and from day one I've had problems with the termination point near the driveway. I glued down the rubber moulding and seems like every couple of weeks it comes loose. I've used flooring adhesive, silicone and epoxy and nothing will stick. My driveway is on a slight grade so we need to "get on it" a bit to get into the garage and that's when it comes off.


HELP!!!!!

I think the concrete is probably so contaminated with various adhesives that now nothing will stick to it.

Have you tried grinding the concrete where you apply the adhesives? I'd try that, if you can do it neatly. You'll remove the contaminants and open up the "clean" concrete under the surface.

i'm wondering if you could use a metal strip (similar to a carpet strip) and just screw it into the concrete.... i might work.. jim

A bit off topic but, should 30 year old concrete be acid etched before applying the VCT adhesive? or what type of cleaning process is recommended?

The VCT does not require etching. Sweep the floor really well, mopping it couldnt hurt (allow to dry of course) and then maybe vacuum aswell. The glue used for the tile will pretty much stick to anything, as long as moisture isnt an issue.

I used an aluminum strip you can see at the bottom of the photo. I bought it at Home Depot. I used a concrete glue to afix it. It is the same thickness at the tile and has not moved.

Have you thought about someone coming and putting some kind of beveled tile there? Or beveled cement?

How about trimming a tsunami seal to match the profile of the tile? Kill two birds with one stone.

Do you park your daily drivers on the VCT floor? How well does it hold up to daily traffic and stones stuck in tires? My driveway is not paved and I always end up with little stones stuck in the tread.

How does it hold up to water and salt in the winter?

Can't help you much. We don't have any of those issues in So. Cal. I am guessing that niether would be good for the floor though.
