vct scratch protection

I tried searching and havent found anything.

I recently put some vct down with like 4 coats of the armstrong polish. I drug a milk crate across the floor and it left scratches on the floor. The tile still is shiny like i wanted it to be but now im looking for that extra protection from scratches

More polish.

Edit: And I don't mean more coats for durability. More polish to fill in the scratches. If it's in a small area, you can even just pour a little on a paper towel & wipe over them to make them disappear.

Wolverine's BondTite 1101 is frequently used over VCT. It offers abrasion resistance and doesn't require constant waxing and buffing. It also encapsulates VCT and helps prevent liquids from draining through the gaps and working its way underneath. Uses are grocery stores, food prep areas, and even shop and garage floors to name a few.

We recommend a 5 mil coating over VCT. Any gallon of liquid, be it milk, Root Beer, or even epoxy, will cover 1,604 square feet to a depth of 1 mil. So 1 gallon will coat 320 ft2 to a depth of 5 mils. That's before waste is factored in, waste is typically 10%, so in the real world, on a real floor, 1 gallon of epoxy will coat about 288 ft2 to 5 mil dry coated depth.

According to the Department of Energy 2001 Residential Energy Consumption Survey "...a two-car garage is 400 square feet, and a three-car garage is 600 square feet in size." We'll use the average of 500 ft2 for this example.

500 / 288 = 1.736, so it will take about 1.73 gallons to coat a 500 ft2 area to a dry depth of 5 mils.

BondTite comes packaged in 3 quart kit and 3 gallons kits. It is a 2 part 100% solids product with no extenders like water or solvents that evaporate, so what you buy and apply is what you end up with.

Two 3 quart kits is a bit short, so it will take three 3 quart kits. Our pricing is that a 3 quart kit is priced the same as a gallon in a 3 gallon kit, $75. Due to those price points we could ship three 3 quart kits for $225, or we could ship a 3 gallon kit for that same $225, which is clearly a better deal.

Fortunately with BondTite 1101 it's a case of the more the merrier, so you could take the entire 3 gallon kit and put on a pretty thick layer. ((3 x 1604) / 500)- 10% = 8.66 mils. At a dry thickness of 8.66 mils that's a full 73% more than the recommended 5 mils coating. That would net out to 45 cents per square foot.

Or you could use just 1.73 gallons and reserve the remaining 1.27 gallons of Bondtite for another project. In that case the cost for the coated VCT would be $129.74, or 25.9 cents per square foot.

Besides VCT BondTite also adheres to concrete, masonry, steel, and most woods. Plus it has a shelf life of at least 12 months. So you'll probably find that the leftover extra will come in handy soon enough.

I did this to my workbench.
I used Armstrong 12" tiles and cut them up into 5" squares.
I sanded the surface with 80 grit and then used a large paintbrush to apply the BondTite 1101. For a floor, you would pour, spread and back roll it on. The BondTite 1101 really self levels nicely and gives you a high-gloss finish. Even on the the pure white tiles I used, I can't detect any yellow from the epoxy. It is pretty darn clear. I would guess that I am closer to the 5 mil thickness using the process that I did.
Clear epoxy can yellow if exposed to the sun a great deal. Talk to AlphaGarage about their urethane clear product if that is a concern for you.

Before I applied the epoxy on the workbench, I did some non-scientific tests with sandpaper grits with scrap pieces of tile, and found that anything less than 80 grit doesn't give as good of adhesion. I'm sure 60 grit would be fine as well.

Roger mentions the urethane clear product. Is it as resistant to abrasion and other damage as the BondTite? Other advantages/disadvantages? What is the cost comparison?

Will the BondTite yellow over time? If so, what's the likely time period we're talking about?
