I became a member of this forum awhile back but this is my first post. I have been working on my garage for about a year now drywalling, painting, installing electrical outlets and lighting. Now my focus is the floor. I bought 2 of the BLT rubber garage mats but I really like the idea of the VCT tile. I think I am sold on the VCT but I fear that the tiles may start cracking in the cold weather during the winters here in Maryland. My garage is not heated. It doesn't get below freezing in my garage but still, it gets pretty cold out there.

For those of you have gone through a winter with the VCT tile, have you had any problems with cracking tiles?

Do the tiles get very brittle in the cold weather?

Did you use the regular adhesive or did you go with the epoxy based adhesive?

Also, do you see a problem with using the BLT garage mats that I bought on top of a VCT tile floor or do you think that the mats would discolor or stick to the tiles?

Thanks for your help.

Anyone have any experiences they would like to share? I would like to get started on this project as soon as possible if you all recommend it.

Thank you

I remeber seeing a couple guys on here in cold climates with VCT and it appeared to be doing fine. As long as you install it in the recommended temp range I'd think they would be okay. Even if a few of them do get brittle and crack, replacements are super cheap. Hope that helps.

Thanks Luke

Your thoughts do help and you’re right - If a few tiles did crack, it wouldn't be a big deal at all to replace the broken ones.

Thanks again,
Matt

Moisture Test, Moisture Test, Moisture Test, The cold itself won't hurt much but if it consistantly gets wet underneath you will need a vapor barrier and a subfloor before you can tile.

Thanks for the info. I have done the moisture test and it checks out fine. I have also been using the BLT garage mats under my cars for about 8 months now and they are always dry on the underside. Do you recommend using the regular adhesive or the epoxy adhesive under the tiles?

Thanks

I went with the S-750 regular adhesive. I just bought everything at Home Depot. I went with the black and white tiles in a checkerboard design. Seems to have worked well.

What about putting this tile on a floor that has a floor drain and will get wet just about every week year round????? Here in the Midwest, it gets very cold outside but the garage is heated and air conditioned if that makes any difference.

I love the look of the tile but I'm very concerned about durability!!!!

Thanks
