VCT under a lift?

Do you think it would be ok to install a lift on top of VCT flooring or would it be best to install the lift and then tile around it? Curious to know what others have done?

Thanks,

Sean

I have racedeck tiles under both my lifts with no issues, I called racedeck prior to doing it and that is what they recommended.

I would assume it would be the same for VCT tiles

The nice thing about VCT is that it wouldn't be too much trouble to ID the footprint of the lift, then cut around it, since its fairly easy to cut.

Another benefit would be that you wouldn't need to keep your car outside while laying the tile, just keep it on the lift...

I set up three Stinger four-post lifts in my last garage after I had installed Armstrong industrial VCT. Years later, when I moved the lifts to my new complex, the columns left discolored marks on the floor. Replacing a dozen tiles was easy enough to cure the problem.

I will be installing a 2 post lift and I was just concerned about the tile being broken up or crushed by the weight of the lift and kind of crumbling away, then not providing adequate support for the lift base to where I may have to keep watching and retightening it. I'm not sure if I described my thoughts clearly here. :headscrat I suppose once it is pinched down tight between the lift and the floor it won't go anywhere?

Thanks for the info so far.

Make sure you have at least 4" of concrete with 3000 psi strength. I have been on many installs both residential and professional automotive, when a 2-post lift is installed over VCT tile the tile will probably crack and start to crumble under the first few loads and the column may then be unleveled and require you to unanchor the column fish out the broken pieces and then shim up the column(s) to level. If it's a soft VCT type tile, that was not made with asbestos, and its not old and briddle....you might me OK.

If it was me I would pull up the tile where the footings of the two columns will be and then tile or just grout around the base of the columns....I would also give it few cycles under a load or even a couple of weeks in use before you grout or re-tile up to the columns as you will probably have to adjust and tighten up the anchors that may have worked in and settled some.

Good luck with the install...

My slab is 6" thick 4000psi, and under where the lift posts will go I made it 10" thick in about a 4 foot diameter area.

I think I will cut the tile out around the lift posts as you suggested. No sense in taking any chances.

Thanks for the info....
