Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Bagged,
Just finished the thread and I love the work you are doing! I have been building Street Rods professional for almost 18 years now and the attention to detail you put into your vises is what sets them apart. I just started my own shop about 1 1/2 years ago and had almost no equipment and no money so I started scrounging whenever I could. I have been able to collect the things that I need for the most part and am starting to do like you and sell off some of the beginning equipment as I find new and better stuff.

Keep up the good work!!

Thanks rodbuilder. I started restoring vises to raise money for the tools, etc I need and want. I wanted to start working on my truck again and it's tough when the place was a mess and I couldn't find anything. Now I enjoy restoring vises and will probably continue doing so.

As you won't be adding permanent access to the attic do to the codes how about temporary access? Remove the sheet rock from between a set of rafters carefully do the wiring then replace the same piece, it would sure beat having to go from one end of the house to the other, then back through the attic with that one tool or fitting you forgot.

So I stopped by the electrical supply house after work and picked up 50' of 10/2 Romex/nm cable. I also picked up a 4ft 10ga appliance whip, a 30amp on/off switch and some old work boxes. I should be able to get the heater fired up by this weekend.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Only had time to do a little work.

Used 3/4" Emt conduit and a plastic bushing on the end that goes up in the ceiling.

Ran the Romex up.

The electric supply didn't have a 10ga whip but surprisingly Home Depot had it. 4ft 10/2 appliance whip.

I have to finalize where I want to install the welder outlet and the box for the heater wiring so I didn't fish the Romex on this end yet. That's one of the reasons my projects take longer than they should.

The Little Vintage Garage.

I had time today to finish running the 10/2 Romex and got the heater wired up.
I ran the wire to this welder outlet first and pigtailed the wiring that goes up to a switch for the heater. I like to twist all my connections, wire nut them, and tape them.

I wasn't thinking and had issues when installing this box for the heater cutoff switch. This switch will allow me to use the welder outlet and turn the heater off. I first installed a 2x4 box even though I bought a heavy duty 4x4 box for it. Then I put in this light duty 4x4 box and busted it up while installing it. I installed this box before the others and completely forgot about the nice heavy duty extra capacity box I bought. I'm going to change it out tomorrow. I guess that's what happens when you work while hungry.

From the switch to a 2x4 box which connects to the 10gauge 4ft appliance whip.

The cover was made for surface mount boxes and the short screws don't work. I only had one longer screw so I'll have to get another long screw to screw on the face plate.

The heater is connected and works

The light stays on when the knob is turned off. Not sure if stays in all the time but I'll be using my wall switch to turn the heater off anyway.

I'm going to move the heater over to the left towards the wiring to move it away from my overhead storage shelf. I want to add sliding doors to enclose the shelving and the heater would be too close. Then I will throw up a clamp to hold up the appliance whip. I still need to buy faceplates for the switch box and welder outlet. Now I just need it to get
cold so I can test out the heater. Today was close to 50F out.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

If you use a stainless steel single gang cover it will cover the cut in box better. A little harder to drill the hole for the connector though. electrical wholesale houses do carry them with the hole in them. also if you use a flex 90 fitting on the plate the flex will lay on the wall tighter and make it easier and cleaner to strap the flex to the wall. I like to use seal tight instead of flex makes a cleaner looking install

Thanks for the tips. I like the idea of using a seal tight. I'll probably get a stainless cover too.

I forgot be carefull when drilling, mount it to a box or screw it to a piece of wood, if it catches and spins it will cut you up if your just holding it

Thanks. I have a good drill press setup for just this type of work, although I haven't ever drilled a stainless switch/outlet face plate.

The Little Vintage Garage.

I tested out the heater for 2 hours. The temp went from 40F to 60F. Not too bad. A fan blowing the heat down and around would probably help. I'm thinking of moving the heater towards the middle of the garage though. Since it's a small heater, the heater's fan doesn't have enough power to blow heat down and across to where my work benches are. If I move it towards the middle, I could spin and aim the heater to the whichever bench I'm working at. :dunno:

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

I was able to get my fan mounted on the wall to circulate the heat better in the garage. It works awesome up there!

Great looking vintage fan!
Heat rises but people stand on the floor so it makes sense to push the warm air downward. I'm surprised more people don't fully understand this and use fans.:headscrat

Thanks. Yeah it's a no brainier to use a fan when you have 8ft or higher ceilings.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Haven't had time to do much in the garage. I did clean a little and made this old drill press base into a vise tree.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1454024470.997545.jpg
Also picked up a Wilton 9350
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1454024497.146556.jpg
And a Parker 974
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1454024515.838680.jpg
I'm getting another Parker 955 so I need to sell this one.

Great little shop! I love your collection of classic tools, I always keep an eye out for old USA made tools and machines. I have an old Wilton vice from my dad's garage and hope my grandson has it in his shop some day. And I have that same 30 drawer cabinet, $10.00 from scrapyard, perfect for all the small connectors, fittings etc...Thanks for sharing!

Congrats on the new job, Hilti makes a ton of useful stuff and we use them quite a bit at work. Will you get to stay in the same place or will this cause you to have to move?

Thanks Jb. Yes they do and it should be a fun yet challenging sales job. I won't have to move. My wife is a teacher and we live in the same town as most of our family so I wouldn't want to relocate anyway.

The Little Vintage Garage.

Guys I've been really busy with my new job. I've been learning and just trying to figure everything out. I had to go to Oklahoma to training 2 times. Being away at the beginning of spring backed up my yard work as well. So hopefully I can get some work done soon.

I really do like that drill press set up, with the nearby grinder at a very handy angle. I also think the fan is awesome and love the vises!

Best Regards

Great job recycling / up-cycling those old vises, cabinets and tools.

Gives your garage a cool feel.

Brian

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Finally had time to get the etank cleaned up and ready for some de-rusting this year. I spent a whole $5 on new rebar for the anodes. This Parker was dropped off by a customer who's grandfather owned it. Not getting a mirror finish on anything but will be getting cleaned up like the others with fresh red paint, and fully operational again.

It's a Parker 2x

It's de-rusting fast.

Nice! I usually let it cook for a couple days. Then I scrub it down and then toss it back it for a couple more to get it perfectly clean. I am hoping to have it prepped for paint by next Sunday. I have to deliver it in 2 weeks.
