Any of you guys go beyond a beer or soda fridge and buy a vending machine for your cold ones? I just saw this and suddenly wished I was a richer man so I could buy it and fill with frosty delights in the barn!

An old vending machine would be cool. I guess I'll just have to make do with my 5 tap keezer (kegerator made out of a chest freezer). :rocker:

Been wanting one, but a few things stop me... knowing nothing about them... killing a LOT of space for a little kitsch, and i like diet dr pepper, and there are almost NO old ones of those!

I've an old jawbreaker machine in my garage - grandson loves it & collects quarters from the whole family for it when he's here.

I'd make space for an old Dr. Pepper machine. A guy in our car club has one of the older Coke boxes that have the tall narrow glass door where you pull the drink out horizontally - similar to the one in the first post but older. And it still works.

Brings me back to college. We had a similar machine vending 25 cent long neck Pabst bottles.

I wouldn't even care what the vending machine said on the outside. As long as it was stocked with cheap, cold beer, I'd be happier than hell.

It is a good point about how much space it takes up, though. Maybe I should just put a regular sized fridge out there, then at least it could store extra food and drinks for household use and not just be a beer machine.:headscrat

I am in the middle of restoring an Old Dr. Pepper machine. It will be in my basement. I have an old Coca Cola Machine upstairs in the garage loft. Trying to finish that room now. And I bought an old Pez Dispensing Machine thats about the size of a Cigarette machine.
A Friend of mine restores old Pinball machines and old soda machines...he gave me the 2 that I have.
Heavy as Hell. both dispense Bottles.

I'd like to have one, but:

1) don't have room for one right now
2) our electric bills are high enough right now (how many electrons do one of these consume anyway?)

Here a couple that I have in my garage, The Hot Rod Grille. The Ideal 55 "slider" holds 55 bottles, or the bottle rack can be easily removed to make space for larger items. The LaCrosse "upright" is from the 60's and vends cans. I keep it stocked with 4 kinds of "liquid refreshment".

Not a vending machine, but the soda fountain in my garage is a fully-operational 1950's Bastian-Blessing. I keep it stocked with Pepsi, Root Beer, Orange, Grape, Cherry and Vanilla syrups to mix with the carbonated water. The ice cream cabinet is stocked with chocolate and vanilla ice cream and there are chocolate, strawberry, pineapple and caramel syrups on the soda fountain syrup rail. At our house if someone says "let's go for ice cream", it means "let's go to the garage"! It's not surprising that we always have friends dropping by on warm summer evenings!

Wow.

The pharmacy in my hometown had that exact machine... except it was branded with Coke products.

How do you keep nastys out of the ice cream stuff? My garage always has like 1/8" of metal dust over everthing from grinder and welding stuff.

:lol_hittitakes too much room.........besides, why should i pay for beer twice?.........

Don't think of it as paying for it twice......think of it as reinvesting for your future. also to keep the free loaders away!

I always wanted one of those that had the glass door on the front. So I could see without opening that I was out of beer.:bounce:

Pop machines are great to have in the garage and the kids get a kick out of using it Mine is a Vendo 63. It holds 63 bottles and a few in the bottom for pre-cooling. It is from 1958 or 59 and it does chew through the juice. There are brand new refrig. units for these machines that use much less juice and as soon as this one quits, thats where I'm going. But till then, I'm just fascinated by the 50 years old stuff still running smoothly. I am almost through restoring it, just need to finish the painting on the cabinet and apply the original style decals I bought online. I put it on casters because it made a nasty scratch on the epoxy when I first brought it home.
The "tool box" built into the cabinets is actually my beer fridge. I made a panel for it to replicate the quintessential Craftsman base box.

I have an old Coke machine similar to the Ideal. No refrigeration guts in it but I do fill it with ice for parties and I can keep about 100 cans of beer cold...

One of the best things I remember about my uncle's shop was the Dr. Pepper machine. He only had Dr. Pepper, it was in the mid west, and my uncle would say "DAMMIT YOU ONLY DRINK DR. PEPPER BOY!". While my dad and uncle were working on cars, I'd find some chore to do so I could make the 10 cents for a Dr. Pepper from that machine. I was more fascinated with the machine in his garage, than I was the Dr. Pepper.

That being said, Yes there are more efficient coolers now. If you want to put your beer, lunch, and Otter Pops in the same place, go get a refrigerator . They are cheaper, lighter, and common. Yes they take up space...just like everything else does. If you want the nostalgic look, get an old pop machine. There were pop machines like these at every gas station and wrecking yard. They had a cool machined mechanical look to them that hasn't been made for 40 years. They're heavy, can be a ***** to repair due to the mechanics, **** a lot of power, but you'll be the only one on the block. Like tciani said, there are newer cooling units that you can put inside them. They were designed to be run on freon, not the pale imitation that's used today. You can find them for all different prices on Craigslist. If you're into the 50s-60s garage look, they'll fit right in. If you have Ferraris and Porsches in your garage, maybe not so much. Fill them with beer for 50 cents, and the free beer mooching buddies you have will actually have to chip in a little for a change!!

I would absolutely LOVE one.

The old time soda machines and gas pumps are very neat to me. Even though I wasn't even alive when they were used.

I think they would be a fun resto project when my garage is done. I would just put them in an area of the garage/basement that doesn't get dirty. I also probably wouldn't keep the soda machine plugged in except for special occasions (guests over). Otherwise, it would pretty much be a waste of electricity unless you worked in that area every day and could really use the machine.

I have a Square top Coke machine built in 11/75 and it still works great! The door lights up along with the Coke Sign. The USS 8-64 takes cans and bottles which is a plus. If anyone is interested in the red and white one I will take $400.00 for it. It has been in storage covered and everything works on it. No shipping. Thanks

Used to have a newer style bubble front one in my garage that dispensed 20oz bottles and cans, but then one day I looked at it and realized how much room it took up. I sold it for $750($500 more than I paid for it) and bought a smaller Pepsi Glass Door cooler(like the ones you see in supermarkets). I love the thing and it takes up hardly no room.

I have a Caviler 72 (coca cola) that I restored about 16 years ago in my basement. I recently bought a Westinghouse chest unit for the shop. I'm thinking of not restoring (ie refinishing) it and leave it original except for what it needs for functionality.

I know this isn't a pop machine, but I've always wanted a Stoner vending machine. Classic looks, totally mechanical...except the lights, and it's full of candy! Price of these has gone thru the roof in the last few years. West coast isn't the best place to find them, so when I do find ones I can afford, the shipping puts it over the top. This is my favorite picture of one.....I can relate to this a bit.

Here's my '74 in the Garage... as of 1-19-2010 I've got it 50% broken down for restoration. I will also post a photo of what I aim to do with the HD Theme - only better with detail. I am having the diamond plate water jet cut for the coin slots and with HD Logo (see photo also)
