Venmar Contructo 2.0 Air Exchanger Safety Recall

My wife and I built a house in 2007. This morning I woke up to the smell of burning plastic/something electronic.

Went to the basement and discovered the Venmar air exchanger motor was smoking. It was quickly unplugged.

I called my HVAC guy, new motor runs $450.

Did some googling and noticed that there was a safety recall issued by Venmar sometime in 2007 for the same issue we had, burning motor - potentionally starting a house fire. Our model number and year of manufacturing are part of the recall.

Does failing to register under a safety recall or registering the exchanger void the warranty work under recall?

I only ask because if I remember right, a car company will change out something even after the 'warranty' has lapsed if its a safety issue. Also - kinda disappointed in the HVAC guy for not even mentioning the recall on the same product he sells. Only to state, it will be $450.

Any comments?

My understanding is that there is no registration needed to obtain repairs for safety-related recalls. In fact, I believe it is required that a company properly handle any and all safety related issues regardless of original warranty status or even if the item has changed hands and the normal warranty is not transferable. Contact the company with your information and they will make it right.
