i have a 30x60 building with a 15 foot vaulted ceiling. i'm looking to put a fan up in the peak on one side of the building to help aid with welding smoke, heat, etc. does anybody have any suggestions on where to get a good quality unit? something that seals decent when not in use (for winter). won't be used all the time, but i figure now's the time to install before the osb goes up. also, i will have 4 celing fans running down the center of the peak. thanks.

A friend of mine bought a really nice one that was actually meant for a greenhouse. It works really well and isn’t very loud...I'll have to ask him what brand it is...

if you’re going to be doing much welding nothing beats having a "smog hog" style exhaust system...

you can build a really basic one and just vent it outside...

I have a 24" Dayton shutter-mounted vent fan in the gable end of my garage. It clears the building (26x32) of any kind of smoke or fumes in pretty much a hurry. The shutter will flap about in high winds. One solution is to build a box around the fan on the inside and equip it with a door or doors like a cabinet. Add some weatherstrip to keep the drafts out. Since yours will be mounted rather high, hinge the door from the top and use a rope and pulley arrangement to open from below. Adding a weight to the inside bottom edge of the door will keep it shut tightly without needing any sort of latch.

High flow of air out means you will need air in, just keep that in mind and maybe plan for a filter on the inlet side?

i'm familiar with the concept of having to let air in at the same time. we have this same type of system at work, and we just open a walk thorugh door on the opposite side of the room. works pretty good. i'm also aware that a lot of systems i've seen will probabally have the flap in the wind issue. might be something i have to live with. thanks for the help so far, keep the ideas coming.

in case anybody cares, i called the company, and they replyed that their fan would not last if i mounted it vertically. the bearings would not hold up.

we have a fan setup at work that is a dayton, so i checked into their stuff. looks pretty good, i'll probabally go with them. i know what you mean by the flapping in the wind, that gets real annoying, expecially when real windy! i think i could come up with some sort of setup to save my sanity.
