I installed a through wall exhaust fan not too long ago and was just wondering.
The take up air needed is 470 CFM. I usually just crack the garage door while running. I have no windows in the garage.
I was just under the house in the crawl space looking at the wall with the garage on the other side.
It's block 40" up to the floor joist which are 2x10's doubled up.

Do you thing it would be ok to make 4 or 5 round 2" cutouts right in the center of the joist spaced maybe 1 1/2" apart and mount a register on the wall in the garage baseboard where the cutouts would be?
This is near a corner. Do you think it would hurt the structure of the joist?
I was thinking of putting pvc pipe with a snug fit in each cutout hole for strength.

I think the take up air would be enough, and there's a lot of square footage down there with cool air in summer and warm in winter.
There's plenty of outside vents all around the crawl space.

Your thoughts are welcome and thanks in advance.

4 or 5 two inch holes are never going to pass 470 CFM.
The vents around the foundation are probaly 3x5 or 4x6.
That is a lot more area.
Think of them if you want to **** air from under the house.

Why not just get a chisel, knock out a block, and put in a crawlspace vent? It's the same size as the cement block.

Most codes prohibit the sharing of air from a garage to a residence or area under a residence. Typically walls separating a garage from a residence are fire rated, and you will be negating the fire rating by putting in holes. Additionally, you do not want fumes from the garage entering the space if the fan fails. I would not do it.

Yes, i suspect i'm stepping on code violations here and if someone was to have a home inspection done for purchase in the future i'm busted there.
So i guess i'll just keep the door open a bit while in use for now. Thanks again, ya'll.
