I will soon be starting a complete overhaul on my single. One of my projects is to vent the central vac to the outside . I was wondering if there is some type of cover I can put on the outside to keep birds out and for some type of protecting of cold in winter (perhaps some kind of flap?) Is there some type of cover made for the central vac? thank you

I just used the same inlet cover as I used inside. I pulled the spring out of it so it can open easily, and gravity keeps it shut when not in use.

There are lots of screens out there for direct vent appliances. (You can search for direct vent screens.) Some are made of PVC and glue to the inside of PVC fittings.

Do you have a tightly insulated house? If so, this arrangement could cause you pressure balance problems or cause your vacuum to work harder. (Because it will have to **** outside air through your walls and windows to make up for the air it's pumping outside of your building.)

I never understood why all central vacs weren't vented outside, mine smelled like old dust everytime I ran it. Great idea.

The exhaust on my central vac just goes thru the wall and has a 45 deg elbow on the end of the pipe just to keep the rain out. It is open and I've never had an issue with bugs or birds getting in it and it's been that way for years. Now that I said that, I'll probably have a problem with something making a nest in it.
