Stamped steel and the window makes it look like a 2 dollar General(I think) that I probably still have in a box someplace. The nut on the left should be knurled for locking it in place. Mine was impossible to read and read in 1/128ths of an inch. I only kept it to have a loaner when someone wanted to use my caliper.

Rusty caliper by unknown mfr? value ~ $0

I think you are somewhat off base find the lion logo and you will have the found the maker. yes condition, condition, condition is everything as to value being zero well maybe not as low as you think.

I have been checking for a lion logo with no luck, but then again I am not all that well versed in tools outside the United states. We need some of are other members outside of the USA to chime in.

I like it. I have always liked vernier scaled instruments because of their simplicity, you just have to have good enough close-up vision to read them accurately. The older I get the harder it gets to read them, but I think I will be okay for a few more years. This would be nice to carefully take apart and clean with a fine rotating brass brush-wheel. They are super-handy cheap tools that you can leave in the top of your tool-chest and grab whenever you want to measure anything.

Hi Mahesh.

Those exact calipers were sold in the U.K. about 20 years ago. They were sold under various brand names, the one I remember being C.K.

They were really cheap (£1.99) springs to mind, and a lot of folk bought 'em, including me!

I keep it with my carpenters tools for matching drills to screws!

Old ones probably just get chucked!

Woody, that was my very first precision tool I bought back around 1975 when I got a job in an automotive machine shop. Seems fairly well made and accurate, although the depth blade broke off on mine years ago. Mostly use my Mitutoyo digital now, but keep the Craftsman for backup, and use it once in a while.

Woody, I used to be a machinist and kept these at home as I had other pair at work. Mine are also Craftsman but coo is Japan, they look slightly different. Untouched, the slide is clamped in place. You must push the thumb stud down to release it, I thought it was an interesting idea.

I came across mine the other day, not a General after all. It is marked "Spain". I only ever used it for comparing different thickness and never attempted to actually measure with it. I'll take a pic sometime to post.
