How many versions of the #2 Phillips screw driver are there.
I have heard of
-standard (guess that is what it is called)
-JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard)
-Pozidriv

Someone told me there is a T2, I never heard of that one.
Anymore???

Also, What is the largest Phillips made...#4 ??

largest i've seen is #4, have a screwdriver and socket version at work. 60's-70's GM door hinges, el camino tailgate hinges. impossible with a #3. even ground off a huge #3 to try. no beans.

Which ones of these are must haves? Does anyone actually own all of these and use them? When i worked in a Japanese Plant, no one bought the special JIS drivers.

I own a SO set from the late 90's that has the black handles and the 2 gray handled Pozidriv. I always reach for the black ones.

Why do some strip my sheetrock screws ?

I consider myself a pretty intelligent guy. I can find my way out of the shop during a power outage, but I am at a loss for Phillips screws. I have one can of Dewalt tips that work well for drywall and another that do not. Seem to be the same tips to me. I wish the manufacturers could get it together on this one. Color Coding? Better Labels? idk. There are so many specialty drives now that you could walk away from Phillips except for the cost difference. :willy_nil

The must-haves from my perspective are:
Phillips: #00--#3
Pozi: #1 and #2
JIS: #00--#2

Pozi screws you can recognize because of the extra tick marks in between the cross. The driver has some extra material in between the crosses relative to a Phillips. The sides of the Pozi cross are also closer to parallel, to prevent cam-out when engaged with the corresponding recess. Pozi seems to show up a lot on European-built equipment (test gear, electronics, etc.)

JIS looks almost identical to Phillips, but has sharper corners. Occasionally the screws are marked with a little dot in one of the quadrants of the cross, but in my experience that is rare. If I am ever having a bad fit with a Phillips, I reach for my Vessel JIS "Megadora" drivers or my Moody JIS precision drivers and it fits right in. Not only does JIS appear on some (but not all) Japanese equipment, I've also found screws with the characteristic sharp corners in equipment and other consumer products made in China.

Prince & Reed is another.

Reed comes before Prince in this case. ;)

Technically, it was already mentioned above. Frearson and Reed & Prince are the same. Most people nowadays haven't heard of either name.

Also, What is the largest Phillips made...#4 ??

Yes.

Smallest is #000, but that size is rarely found in the average tool box. Even many jewelers' screwdriver sets stop at 0 or 00.

P2R = phillips #2 reduced (dia.),

Common for drywall & construction screw's. I find they fit better then regular #2 bit's most of the time.

Phillips is phillips. You can call others "cross(type)" or "star" but not phillips!

You beat me to it. Phillips #2 is just one tool form. Phillips patented the "Phillips" drive and that is it. All the others are a bit of a change from Phillips and therefore are not a Phillips. If you find that your tool does not fit the screw then you have the wrong tool. I'm to tired to search it out now but there are webpages that describe the different shapes of the different drive types.

Being like 80 years (or more?), the patent is no longer valid, so everyone produces "correct" phillips if it is marked as phillips.

I find it weird that almost 99% of all screws in the world are phillips, yet it is a pattern that is DESIGNED to cam out once it reaches a given torque.

#2 Phillips is just that. Posidrive, JIS, and the many others mentioned are NOT #2 Phillips. The only variation of #2 Phillips tips is a full tip vs what I call a "sheetrock" tip that is reduced in diameter, but still designed to fit a #2 Phillips screw head.

I installed a house full of Ikea stuff and the screws were all marked like Posidrive. I bought a Dewalt Posidrive set so i wouldn't have to deal with Phillips slipping. Guess what? The Phillps bits grabbed better than the Posidrive ones!

I wonder if Ikea uses something different, but is marked so similar to Posidrive that I confused it?

Even among one spec such as an ACR bit there is a lot of variation. I have posted this picture here before, but in the following picture, from left to right the screwdrivers are as follows.

Snap On Instinct #2 ACR
Snap On #2 ACR bit
A no name screwdriver with a licensed Phillips ACR tip

Screwdriver%20Tip%20Pic.jpg

You can clearly see the difference in geometry of the ACR ridges. Out of the 3, I think the Snap On bit and the no name are the best at holding the screw.

What kinds of equipment and products are you running into that have JIS ?

Sometimes it is simply a matter of getting a better fit on a screw that is probably "technically" Phillips, but just doesn't seem to want to fit nicely. Because the JIS driver has less material on the inside of the cross, and is otherwise basically the same shape, you can use it just fine in a regular Phillips recess. The opposite, of course, is not true -- a regular Phillips in a JIS recess will cam out like nobody's business (more so than Phillips already does...)

A few examples where the JIS driver has produced a better fit that I've spotted recently:
-- Canon point-and-shoot camera
-- Logitech universal remote
-- Inside an iPhone 4 (once you get past the pentalobe nonsense...)
-- The inside corners of the cross recesses on the screws holding together a Stanley tape measure I recently bought look pretty sharp and JIS-like

There have been plenty of other cases where I've been glad I have the JIS drivers in arm's reach, but those are the recent ones off the top of my head.

Most anything from Japan or containing Japanese manufactured assemblies.

My Vessel Tool Megadora JIS screwdrivers have become one of my favorite screwdrivers. Folks try to get those JIS screws out with phillips screwdrivers but the JIS screwdrivers work so much better.

Pozi drive has lines in the tip area. There is the combo drive too, most new deck screws are this way now, using a #3 phillips bit or a square drive bit.Older Fords in the early 1900s used square drive screws,Henry Ford wanted to buy the patent from the inventor. That never went through.Phillips screws tend to cam out stripping the screw head out.The Square drive does not do this.McFeely's is a supplier of square drive and there is a chart in their catalog showing this including pozi drive.

Phillips and pozidrive are diffrent screw driver tips. A Phillips screw driver will not work with pozidrive screw. A Pozidrive screwdriver will not work with a phillp screw. I have never seen a Japanise Phillip screw, I have seen a japanise screw in a book. The only thing I have ever used a pozidrive screwdriver on is my Hohner MS Hormonicas. The screws holding the harp reedplates and covers are pozidrive. When I blow a reed I replace the reedplates. The ACR bit just has teeth to grip the screw. ACR = Anti-Cam out Ridge
