Vertical clamping on Workmate

I got an early model cast aluminum Workmate that doesn't seem to have the vertical clamping feature of later model Workmates. Vertical clamping seems like a very handy feature so I was wondering what methods folks recommend to do this on models like mine? Thanks.

I use a big C clamp or two usually.
