I want to build 3 vertical storage racks for flat bar and round bar steel.

1.5 wide and approximately 6 different thicknesses
2” wide and approximately 6 different thicknesses
The tallest pieces will be 4ft, with some 3 and 2ft pieces.
Approximately 20 different steel types

Was thinking a rectangular shape 2.5” x 4” square for each of the different thicknesses….so lots of square compartment. Does anyone have some pictures of how they store short pieces of steel in a vertical formation. I also don’t want them leaning much.

thank you!

Would a bunch of PVC fence post covers cut and put together work for you? They are thinner but I think when you put them right next to each other they would be strong enough. That would probably be the cheapest way to get square storage.

Here is my vertical scrap cart.

I basically did what you are thinking, but I found some 4x4 16ga steel tube in the remnants bin at my local steel supplier.

I wanted the other half for other purposes. The gap is used to store partials of sheet goods. If you go this route, make sure you make the size and even multiple of the tubing size. Also put better casters on it than you think you will need. It gets heavy fast.
