Vertical versus Horizontal outdoor receptacles?

For outdoor applications is there any practical reason to choose vertical receptacles over horizontal or vice versa? I don't know if the looks are that much different.

This is a new installation so ease of installation is not an issue.

Personal preference, really. Either way is fine. Note that outside receptacles need to have weatherproof while in use covers; they are available in both vertical and horizontal configurations but make sure you get the right style for however you want to install the receptacles.

If you are going to be using some kind of siding, like vinyl, depending on how the box gets installed, a vertically mounted receptacle might not fit on the siding well without overhanging on the bottom or top of the lap. Horizontal will almost always fit.

I am installing Smartside siding. For the receptacles I am going to put a piece of Smartside trim where each receptacle goes. This will give a me a nice flat place to install receptacles.

I am planning to use the Arlington in-use boxes. Now, I just need to decide on vertical or horizontal.

the only thing about the arlington is that the cord end goes into the box, which is recessed. It can be difficult to get your hand in there to grab it and pull it out. Of course, you could just do like the rest of us and jerk the cord...

That sounds like a good reason not to use the Arlington boxes then. I think a house near my parent's house used them so I should take a look when I go over in a few days.

I used some fairly low profile covers on the house that don't look as bad as the clear plastic domes. Maybe I should just stick with those on the garage.

You can also get them in colors...white and gray are the most popular, but they come in most every other color 'cept blue. It can make them disappear...

Another thing to consider with the Arlington style boxes is, your screwed if the thing gets broken. To replace you'll need to remove the whole box and circuit to replace it. If its in a rough service location, I like to use Die cast, in use covers to mitigate damage and to prevent breakage.

To each his own, using common parts makes repair easier down the road, which is inevitable. Sleek looking is nice, but a PITA when it needs repair.

Most standard covers including in use types, are made to mount to a single gang box pattern of any type, with the standard screw center distances, same go's for the device contained within. Be they weatherproof or indoor types.
