Vertically sliding panels anyone?

So in a nutshell, I have this really nice window that is approximately 18" tall by 96" wide. I really like that it lets in some really nice light, but I would like to be able to block it off the window from view with a sliding panel.

So the idea is to get some single hung window pulleys and some weights and have it move just like a counterbalanced window. Its going to be a rather large panel though, and I think I am going to need some aluminum trim to keep it sturdy so it doesn't droop in the middle.

Has anyone ever done something like this? The idea is that I could reach up with a broom handle and push it up or pull it down pretty easy.

Sounds like it should work. Assuming you are going to use a weight on each side? You may have to experiment with the amount of weight on each side so the panel stays in the position you leave it in. (Still might need to latch it in position somehow.)

Are you going to place the panel in some kind of track to keep it in line? Some kind of aluminum C-channel, maybe? Or a waxed wooden track?

Thinking out loud here... Could you mount it on springs? Have the springs pull it up (open) but pull against the springs (down) to close, then somehow latch it to keep it closed. I've seen a similar concept on louver doors on exhaust fans in barns.
