Has anyone got a Verus Edge or Zeus that they’re not paying the monthly on? I’m looking at a used unit to keep on a dock in the shop, but won’t be paying the monthly.

Part of the attraction is having the auto-data style information on the device (not the shop stream online stuff) but do you loose this if you don’t keep paying?

I used to leave mine off subscription, gen 1 windows 7 Zeus.

The only thing you lose is suretrack/intelligent diagnostics. The web based stuff. If you have a separate sub for Mitchell or whoever their service info is that would stay active as it's not part of the same subscription for software updates and intelligent diagnostics.

You will lose the ability to recieve the updates to the scanner software, and if you're using Autoauth for bypassing secure gateways that will no longer function once the current update runs out. So if you have 24.2 on the tool, when 24.4 comes out you're not using autoauth.

If you are referring to guided comments test, that is all still included. Basically just turn off the wifi, and that's the tool without current software.

It was the service info I’m interested in, the stuff under information:

IMG_8362.jpeg

I hadn’t realised that’s a separate subscription. I’m happy without the snap on online stuff, had it on my triton and didn’t seem much use for euro stuff.

My SO guy has offered me a cheap Verus Pro which has got the Information stuff (Autodata in the uk) saved on it and apparently it won’t time out or need a subscription. Stuff like wiring diagrams and service info, which seems quite useful to have, but I’m not sure if I want hardware that old as part of the attraction is a shop-proof PC, so wondering if the edge/zeus is the same or if I’ll have to pay for Autodata/haynes pro.

On my Zeus, I click on suretrack and repair information, shop key pro is the service info. This is a separate subscription in the US market.

It may have left over credentials from. A previous owner and is still on their plan. In our market you can look in the top right and see the user name and ID of the logged in party. You may just be using a paid service, but the tool is still registered under some parties "5 tools included for your shop" data policy.

That’s such BS. I understand that you would need a current license to access SI and get the latest vehicle updates. I even understand why they might not offer device updates if you don’t have a subscription. But they’re actively denying a feature that’s facilitated by a 3rd party PURELY to coerce you into updating? F that.

All true. But it's Snap-On and they don't give a **** so in their world view pay up sucker. Not that I really object to this as I do love my SNA dividend checks.

Hold up hold up. AUTOAUTH is the problem, not the scan tool manufacturers specifically

Previously autoauth allowed out of date tools to access the servers. This grace period ended. Autoauth turned off the ability of the tools to work without current software. IDK what is going on behind the scenes with OEMs, autoauth, and the scan tool manufacturers. But the scan tool manufacturers didn't disable anything, autoauth did.

If you want to blame scan tool companies for neutering tools, let's talk NASTF, key/immobilizer functions, and vehiclr theft.

I always wondered why **** cars like Chrysler's need to be so well protected from theft. I would expect their owners would want them to be stolen so that they can buy a decent car.

"Urban youth" stealing hellcats, **** packs, etc. Nobody gives a **** about any of their other junk, just the v8 cars.

The whole gateway thing is from a mostly BS demo that MIT? did to "take over" control of the car remotely. Vulnerability that didn't really exist, but FCA used it as an excuse to try and shut the aftermarket out. They're very anti aftermarket.

Do we know that for sure? I’m googling and the only thing I can find is another GJ thread :ROFLMAO:

Autoauth closed the option for out of date tools. It was talk of the town for months. Now perhaps scan tool manufacturers asked for this on the back end? But auto auth was who officially made the announcement.

Couldn’t retract parking brake calipers on late model Ford the other day with my out of date snap on scanner. Up to date Autel worked. I don’t think Autoauth has anything to do with that.

Right, that's just a features issue or their test doesn't work. Newer Fords use CANFD protocol, IDK how new your tool is.

Topdon and autel failed me recently on Honda? electric parking brake. Snap on saved the day, but earlier it didn't have afr balance test or live data on another car for a specific input voltage to a transfer case module. Autel and topdon respectively had the info snap on didn't.

That's one of the most frustrating things about scan tools I've learned through the experience of others... It doesn't matter how much your scan tool costs, who makes it, what brand or what features/software it has, you probably need more than one. Or if you're doing this **** for a living, you definitely need more than one.

I know all about aftermarket scan tool short comings. That's not the case here. Vehicle was a 2019 Escape I believe. Scan tool is a D10 Triton with 22.2 software. If you don't have an internet connection and current software you cant use your scantool to get into EPB maintenance mode.

I had a similar and very frustrating experience with a 2017 Ford Escape and an Apollo D9.
Not sure what version the software was, probably the latest version at the time, but it definitely wasn't connected to wifi.

I just did it on 2018 Escape and it worked. Didn't ask for an internet connection. Must be 2019 and up.

That's very interesting. I believe 2019 was when Ford introduced some new protocols.

Although AESwave lists the CanFD adapter for 2020+ escapes.

Dumb question, did the car have an option to use the infotainment screen for EPB? I've seen some brands with that feature native to the infotainment which either don't have a scan tool option, or have issues using the scan tool option.

I don't know if it had an infotainment way in. I'm sure there was a brake pedal/key toggle procedure for it. Look up Snap on Security Link. It says current software required.

That's a gateway then, my mistake.

Security link/Altus drive handles that BS which isn't exclusively through autoauth. It's coming to every manufacturer eventually. Nissan, Ford, FCA for sure are currently involved.

I probably never noticed because I have 3 tools current right now.

My general understanding is the ONLY tool that will work 99.9% of the time is the OE tool. Aftermarket is always a compromise.

Having the big 3, a scope, plus a J2534 is 10k+, and the cost of software yearly. And you need the training! It's not a cheap game. Although it slowly pinches out the under tooled and out of date. Motorists think labor rates are high now? Just wait. Within 10 years I doubt anyone but a hole-in-the-wall ghetto indy shop will be sub $225. The dealers straight up don't want to work on 10yo+ vehicles anyway, so the aftermarket will always exist so long as they pay the piper.

I write 2k estimates all day to keep stuff relatively safe and emissions compliant. And that's always ignoring the 80% bad but not 100% shot bushings, trans cooler lines, ac dye all over lines, and absolutely no maintaince whatsoever.
