I was at Sears last night and saw the same on a metric set here in Torrance, CA. I thought to myself, "wow, half price for a set of USA made Gimmicky Craftsman wrenches", but when I picked up the set...... I saw exactly what you're talking about when it came to the finish. I thought they were just dirty, but I just set it back and ignored them. I've got too many wrenches as is and 40 bucks for a bad finish may lead to them rusting or pitting sooner than I'd like for more pieces of metal in my box.

Some of my better wrenches were never chromed to begin with. Don't make much difference to me.

I've got a set of the X and other than not lining up well to store, I like using them. Not my go to wrench, but maybe one I would grab for banging on with my palm if fastener is stuck.

I bought a few loose wrenches and then a set. My experience was the same - flawed chrome and disappointing finish quality. Went back to Sears do do an exchange, but all of the sets on the shelf were equally as poor.
