I'm tired of my old Craftsman sparkplug sockets falling off the 3/8" snap-on extension I use.

What's a very good quality alternative somewhere between HF and Snappie for me to consider. Just so you can get a fix on where my tastes lie, I have Snappie SAE from the '80's back when I had money and Facom 1/4 and 3/8 metric sockets and USA Craftsmen and Stahlwille metric combo wrenches.

I have Snap On & Wright and a C-man. No issues with any of them.

If the socket is falling off the extension, maybe it's the extension's detent ball that is no good? :dunno:

I Like Ko-ken, they use a clip retainer instead of a rubber plug or magnet. They are the best I've used. I tried the Gearwrench SP sockets years ago and found that their socket was too thick for some recessed plugs.

Also, locking extensions help a lot or a long length SP socket...

I have the matco 5 piece set and can't say anything bad about them.

Another vote for KoKen! I'd suggest them anyway as the price / quality is right where you want (though in my experience the quality is much closer to Snap On than the price is).

Also, for the situation you describe, the KoKen 'extended' spark plug sockets are unbeatable. As M6erfan has pointed out, they use a really strong clip to grip the plug, but with the integral extension you can just yank 'em off the plug without risking leaving the socket behind. (I hate that too).

Have the same set and absolutely LOVE them! I think they're rebranded GearWrench or atleast made by the same company so I'm sure you can find it cheaper than the $150 I paid off the truck for them.

Here are the KoKen, if it helps. Note the brass inserts to protect the insulators, and the spring clips.

The last pic shows the 'extended' version.

They also offer a 'universal' version, which are on my wish list!

I got a Taiwan made Williams off eBay. I have no complaints about it and the price was $6 shipped. Has the rubber boot inside and works very well.

The range of cars I work on makes a fixed extension limited in how useful. Sometimes right on the drive tool to 10'' of extension with wobbles in play. As much as I like my universal SP socket the wobbly extension on any regular socket is easier to place.

I use all cheapos with GN wobble extensions. It does ok on a wide range of models.

I have read enough posts recommending the GearWrench magnetic swivel spark plug sockets that I’ve decided to try them. I need the 5/8 and 13/16 socket and have decided that I prefer the 4 inch versions. My problem is I having trouble finding the 13/16 in that length. It seems that most everyone carries the 5/8 swivel in the 4 inch length but not the 13/16 swivel. Anyone have a source for the 13/16 4 inch swivel version? Thanks.

Have you tried Advanced Auto? Is this the one you are looking for?

To originally poster I usually tape the socket onto the extension so they don’t split apart.

I use an SK 5/8" spark plug socket and a Gearwrench magnetic 5/8" spark plug sockets and they both perform flawlessly! I'd probably go with the Gearwrench though if you are worried about it falling off. They're pretty cheap with coupon codes at Advance Auto Parts.

I bought the GW universal for my 2v 5.4. I wish it was a little longer, though.

And thanks to M6er, I’m going to have to order some KoKens...

I had two Ko-ken spark plug sockets show up in the mail today. I've not tried them yet but they look to be top quality. The slender design is what sold me.

For spark plugs I like to use a locking extension on spark plug sockets. For straight shots I usually use a regular rubber insert socket although I do have a magnetic one. For hard to reach plugs I like to use a swivel/universal type plug socket (with the locking extension). I have various brands of plug sockets but for 9/16 and 14mm spark plugs I use Snap-on or Mac. At the time I needed those sizes I had some trouble finding them so I just went online to the Snap-on and Mac sites. These days they are available from a lot of brands. Also, you can buy replacement rubber inserts from Snap-on which can fit other brands.

The Ko-kens looked very sweet but I bought locally at Advance Auto and ended up with the Gearwrench magnetic 6". Perfect for my dual plugged Airhead. No more dropping sockets and cracked plugs. Thanks for all the recs.
