I have been casually looking for a post leg vise for a while a few days ago a gentleman at work began describing a big old vise he found concreted into the floor of his barn some years ago I said I would like to see it. He said why do you want I said sure. When he brought it to me I was pleased to see it was indeed a large post leg vise. It is missing the mounting bracket and spring but it is massive 6-1/2 inch jaws and somewhere around 150lbs. Also the screw block is brass and a bit different than others I have seen as is the hinge pin. Can anyone shed some light on what exactly I have here.

What you have is a big effin post vise.
The screw nut is more likely bronze. Brass would be too soft to hold up to the stress.

Bronze sure I can believe that. I would really like to know how old it is and where it is from my guess is early to mid 1800s.

The nut for the screw looks aftermarket/homemade. But you got one heck of a deal for a freebie, hang onto that one, the 6"+ size vises don't come around very often.
