If you consider that it matches a 27-40 million Mclaren F1 it makes sense. People here are paying 50.000 for snapon toolboxes like it is some kind of flex
Exactly. Sothebys just auctioned one off last week and the opening bid was set at $23 million. Anyone who can drop $25 million plus on a car is laughing at $81,000 for a matching tool cart. Clearly there was more than one person wanting it for it to get that high.

I understand the tool roll more because thats the most expensive Mercedes model you can possibly buy. If you have some crazy resto 300SL and thats the missing piece to make 100% factory I would buy it. The tool cart wasn't with the car at purchase but that tool roll would have so IMO thats a big difference!

For reference

It was, each McLaren F1 was supplied with the full toolkit.

The GMA T.50 (Son of The F1) also comes with a Facom toolkit.

I read something quick the other day that some older supercar could only be serviced by a specific vintage computer because of how unique the code was.

I would if the drawer with the adapters and "box" plays into the price?

It's exactly this one, the mclaren f1. Mclaren went into great lengths to secure one of these laptops on Ebay some years ago

I saw a similar article, an interview with a Maclaren tech. They wanted the laptop to keep an original, but they software can be cloned in modern computers so it isn't as if you cannot work on it without an old computer.

I think when I first read an article about that, maybe 10 years ago, there was no other way. Now of course they should have come with something

My favorite mclaren f1 story is this;
There was one original owner, I think he commuted every day to work from Belgium to Germany or something like that and used the Autobahn.
He complained about the rear hatch light going off randomly, despite the hatch being properly closed. Mclaren was aware about this, it was due to low pressure lifting the hatch slightly, activating the contact switch. But they were also aware that this occurs only in extremely high speeds, 180mph or more.
So they asked the businessman, where and when is he achieving such speeds, and the answer was; Everyday, when I am going to work and when I come back!

The car got separated? As in, Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly Event?
The story I've heard is the associated car(once the cheapest McLaren F1 available) was shipped overseas(Asia?) and somehow the shipping logistics didn't jibe. With $$ no object you'd think they'd have found a way but that event was well before today's prices for the car and this car was a bargain basement special at the time.
Perhaps it will be re-united with "it's" car.
Not sure if the missing bits are McLaren specific or not.
The roadside tool set for these is much more impressive;https://www.hagerty.co.uk/articles/...1-join-the-club-and-buy-the-tool-kit-instead/

I love stories like this, beat it like a rented mule! It warms my heart to hear that such a car is being properly exploited rather than becoming garage jewelry.

British Actor/Comedian/car fanatic Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean/Johnny English) has/had a purple one that he pretty much used as a daily driver, eventually he crashed it and it became the UKs most expensive automotive insurance claim. If I remember correctly he bought it back from the insurer and had it repaired at the McLaren factory.

They are so valuable nowadays F1 owners are buying the GMA T.50 for £2.5 million so they can lock away the £25 million McLarens to preserve them 😂😂

I've heard he has a knack for this. Didn't his vintage Falcon racer meet a similar end?
Preserve them for what?? It ceases to be a car if not used.
A fellow I know once actively raced a Ferrari GTO. The car is now exquisitly restored and part of a famous collection, never to see the track (and probably road) again.:(

Actually Rowan Atkinson is considered a really good driver. He used to race minis I think. However I think he crashed the f1 not once but twice. Still, the car is so valuable that it cannot be written off by the insurance.
People still race gtos in goodwood revival. There is the option to race a replica (the Duke of Richmond allows that only if you actually own a genuine gto), but I think some race the original 50 million cars.
As for them not being used, it's a shame but rich people hate losing money. One calculated that if he were to take out his Mclaren for a weekend spin the depreciation coming with the miles would be as high as 70000 pounds. And at this point you are really wondering does it worth it compared to a gt3 touring? And this was coming from a guy that actually put miles on his car, even modified it. The other owners probably think the car is automatic, they are clueless

@ Hannibal
I remember a vintage event I attended where a fellow lightly shunted some variant of the 250gt. Back in the pits his crew has hammering and prying away at a fender with anything handy in order to get back on track. Driver(ostensibly the owner) was nonplussed by the whole thing.
I guess if you have enough cake you can eat it too.

As weird as it may seem it doesn't matter that much. The reason is that these were real racing cars, all were raced and I think there are only 16 gtos, they were battered and crashed a lot before they reached 50-70 million status. And nowadays, if a fender needs repair they sometimes have to deliberately throw it around for it to look battered lol.

I don't really know why, I suppose when investors get involved it's all about value, it's not a problem I will ever face 😂😂

Gordon Murray said his new T.50 is better than F1 in every way but a 1/10th of the value, so there's that!!!

He said a few things on the F1 weren't quite perfect like the A/C and the fuel tank that needed replacement every 10 years (engine out job!!!)

I once witnessed the Rock Star Mark Knopfler badly damage his Maserati Birdcage at Silverstone, and I've seen Nick Masons GTO in action at Goodwood (he actually loans his cars out to journalists and race drivers occasionally).

Murray's projects fascinate me, it's a completely insane vanity project really, it's one guy with an obsession to build the ultimate analog road car before his time runs out. Good luck to him 👍

The problem with the T50 is that its fugly. And the T33 is even worse

When I look closer, it is a pretty interesting set of tools.

First, it is a huge box for what is contained in it. Tons of blank space in those drawers.

Second, you would imagine it contains specific tools for the car, but this one almost seems like a generic tool kit. It Does it really need seven sizes of pin punches? The tape measure is cool, it has a very retro almost art-deco look.

I must admit I quite like the T.50 (agree on the T.33 though), I have seen it in the flesh and it's tiny, very refreshing that it doesn't follow the current hypercar trends of loads of wings and enormous wheels and extra weight from all the hybrid ****

But if you really like the 1990s F1 styling and have a few million knocking around they will make it look however you like 🤐
