Very strange water problem

I just came back from town, came into the garage and set down to the computer to see who I can bug today. Sam the Hell Dog started digging at the rug underneath my chair. Which he does that a lot to hide a rock of stick.

And before anyone mentions it, Sam is completely housebroke and does not piss in the house or the garage, ever, and can hold it for hours. Plus I ran my finger through it an smelled it. No taste test though, but it has no odor.

Here is a pic and one with Sam for size. I thought at first when I saw a little water I may have had a little snow on my feet. It's not from the air compressor because it is clear and odorless. It's not from the fridge, because it still needs defrosted. I haven't had any water in the garage other than Sams water bucket and it is away from this area. And there is no evidence of water anyplace at all anywhere else, and I have never had a water problem. There's nothing in the desk that could have leaked, and all that is behind the desk is a 1 1/2 foot void, then a closet behind that. This water spot was maybe 3'x3' in size and rather deep for being under a rubber backed rug. :headscrat:headscrat:headscrat

Can't tell anything from the pics really, but you need to follow the water uphill, wherever that takes you. I'm guessing you have a wall penetration somewhere, or even a roof leak. Water can be getting in somewhere ways away, and following a stud or seam before it finds it's way down a wall to the floor.

Water is too deep to be condensation.

Sam didn't bring a snowball in because it didn't start snowing until this morning and we just got back and came straight into the garage.

No ceiling leaks and the top of the rug is dry. It's one of those long 3'x10' runners. Nothing to leak at the ceiling anyways unless something would come in through a vent, but then it would have to go through the insulation, then through the drywall, then through all the coats of latex paint. Nothing there.

The rug was moved and put back down yesterday right before I went into the house. Sam runs and likes to slide the rugs into a pile. So him and I went in right after I straightened the rugs back out. I also looked under the other rugs and there is no condensation, and I have never had any condensation in my garage ever. I've never had water in the garage other than when I washed it out which was last summer.

It's got me baffled completely. It's just like someone lifted the rug and poured a pitcher of water underneath and put the rug back down. At first I though maybe it was water out of the compressor, but the pressure is up in the tank and it was drained not too long ago.

I could also understand if the refrigerator door wasn't all of the way shut and the freezer defrosted, but it was shut, everything cold, and freezer all iced up.

And where this spot is.....it's back a good 7' or 8' from my back outside wall and maybe 13' from the side outside wall. And there is nothing liquid around that could have broke and leaked.

It has got me totally dumbfounded for sure. And I don't have a weak bladder either.

You know, I think it may have been partial defrosting, but not from a pan. I did have an empty carton beside the fridge and I noticed the flap if the carton got caught in the door. I wouldn't think that little bit would have done it, but it just may have.

Other than that, I know it's not groundwater through the slab as I have never ever had that problem and the garage is going on 15 years old.

Bottom of the fridge is sweating/ condensing , odds on the insulation in it is failing , the fridge then works hard trying to keep cool but as the inside is effectively the outside , the water condenses on the underside and sometimes the sides ,
Sometimes if a fridge is kept in a very cold place you can get the same effect

Fridge could have an obstruction in the defrost drain tube. Mine had a little check valve (WHY???) at the end and would get clogged with a little dog hair and then it would freeze up and then the defrost water would overflow the bottom of the freezer and run on the floor. Had to take the fridge apart to fix it.

If this was in a basement I would say water is coming up thru concrete! Have you had a lot of temp. changes ?

My bet's on the fridge, in some capacity. Maybe its done it before and added up to the amount you found under the rug, since you probably never lift that up for any reason. I know late last spring at my old house/garage I pulled up a rubber backed mat that I store the snowblower on, and underneath was just a lake. Rest of the garage was nice and dry, but that water held under there for what mustve been a decent amount of time. For me the source was obvious, but perhaps the fridge has been pissin a bit or maybe that bit of open-ness triggered a defrost type condition. I suppose a guy could lay something down in front of the fridge and then intentionally leave it propped open a bit to see if it starts leaking and moistening whatever you set in front, or between it and your desk rug I should say.

My office fridge froze up and peed the floor like that, I had to take the plastic panels out of the freezer and defrost the whole thing. Gallons of water in the coils and insulation.

It's been a while since I powerwashed the rugs. It's was maybe two months ago that I did that.

I'm thinking it's the fridge. I need to unplug it, open the door and let it defrost as the freezer portion is complete ice.

I have rubber backed rugs in our garage and used to have them in the house as well. I noted that they seem to collect water under them.
I always assumed it was a capillary action where the water from the dogs or boots deposited on top migrated around underneath somehow.
As a result we took them from the house.

After it's defrosted blow out the drain hose from the outside going in (it's easier) probably plugged up

On some fridges there is a water drain for the defrost runoff, and the filter in that drain gets plugged with crud, and that causes a leak. The filter is usually easy to find on the inside back wall of the fridge- probably worth taking a look.

I may be off base, but let me throw this out there. You say the flap of an empty carton got caught in the door of the fridge. The mat is near the fridge door, so the escaping cold air was cooling the top surface of the mat. The floor is warmer than the cold air from the fridge, so the warmer air in the ribs of the mat is cooled and condensation occurred under the mat. This continued until all the ribs were filled with condensation.:dunno:
