My father did his national service (conscription) in the Royal Air Force as a radar operator mostly in Germany in the 1950's. He then spent the rest of his career designing nuclear weapons for the british government at AWRE Aldermaston including many trips to turn large chunks of Nevada into smoking and very hot glass. Still alive at 74.

My Grandfather on my fathers side was in the 8th Army in the Desert and Italy, although he was a quartermaster sergeant so spent the war dishing out boots and ammo. Died mid 1990's in his late 80's.

My Maternal Grandfather was a professional soldier in 1914 when the Great war broke out and went to war with the BEF on horseback with drawn sabre against German machineguns, taking part in the very first action of the war involving British Troops. He survived the whole war on the western front and died in 1990 at the grand age of 94. He was too old to serve in WW2 so was an air raid warden at home as well as his day job.

Grandfather (87). 54th Troop Army WW2 injured in Biak in 44 but stayed until the end of the war. Cancer survivor, and is now the last of his generation of his family. Listening to his stories alone has been a privilege. I have been lucky enough to have live to this stage in my life (30) and still have all four of my grandparents.
