Some Nicholson I rescued. I had dipped it in HCL to clean the rust off and left the teeth in fairly grabby shape (I assumed some sharpening action). I suppose it's possible that it was a head fake and the teeth were mainly rust too. I think these anvil faces test in the 55-60 HRC range. I don't have hardness files, but I think most bastards are 65 or so?
Yeah, I think that’s correct for Nicholson files.

that seems really high for a striking surface.
it will be interesting to see how they hold up

bumping this thread:

realistically, is the 22lb version too small for any usefulness? zero metalworking plans. More thinking for bending bracket tabs / rod / things like that for auto fab work.

debated but didn't grab the 60lb at $55 when i saw it. can't justify $100 now, but $40 for the 22lb i could justify and have a place to mount it

and at that point - i'm figuring for simplicity of mounting, ready to use, etc the 22lb vevor makes more sense for casual use than a 20lb piece of railroad track?

I think for that kind of work then the 22lb would work just fine. I got the 60 when it was on sale but I had been using the anvil pad on one of my vices for that exact kind of work.

A 22lb anvil would be great for those jobs. Easy to move around, easy to mount on a table if you want and heavy enough for bending brackets and the like. My 2 cents.

thank you for confirming my thinking. it'll give me somewhere other than the vise or random piece of pipe to use

This vevor vendor has ebay 20% off on all items including anvils:

I think this 22lb w/the pirchel hole in the flat face w/a round horn is decent (these are complaints that got fixed):

If you can swing it, this london pattern is well reviewed:

FWIW, HF has a 15# that often goes on sale for ~15$. It's cast iron but better than nothing:

don't forget vevor also has cast iron that are fairly discounted if you sign up:

ebay also sometimes cheaper than website:

thanks. i wound up ordering the 22lb Vevor with teh 20% coupon so it was $50ish after tax.

got it delivered yesterday, but also didn't. They shipped me an "semi-automatic bottle labeler" machine thing. It retails for $270 or so. If there was ANY secondary market for this thing I'd sell it and rebuy an anvil keeping the profits. I can't see this thing selling locally, so working with the ebay seller which I assume is a Vevor alternate to figure out the solution.

oh man, sorry to hear. The vevor sellers have been pretty good in my experience and will likely tell you to keep it plus refund.

yeah i've had good service too. they sent a message bsically saying "do you want to keep that item at 30% off?". nope, i have no use, please send my anvil.

i doubt they'll want to deal with me returning it, but if thats what they want, they can deliver my anvil first then schedule a pick up from my house. I don't have free time to go dropping off their mistakes at the store

20% off worked on the bigger anvils too, to keep this thread on track somewhat

Really tempted.
I really want a nice old anvil, but I've been keeping an eye out for years with nothing to show. I guess at this price what's it matter where it's from and maybe now a good old US one will appear.
But it's an ANVIL!!!
Looks like I snoozed. And losed on the deal.
Amazon had them for $60 (I think) about a month ago.

Almost bought one, half just to see the delivery guy fight with it. He acted libe a ~40lb box needed a forklift and aparently thought of was super man when I grabbed it from him in 1 hand and other boxes in the other.
Maybe worth a bump:

Tenmu has the revised 22lb for 34$, 40$ on Lowes, Amazon & Ebay atm.

Lowes has a few deals on the larger anvils, 88, 110, 132 #'s between 110-160$ to your door. I ended up ordering the 132#. I considered the 110# because the black ones are supposed to be hardened to HRC55 instead of HRC50 of the blue ones & the 110# appears to have a flush pichel hole but the reviews said that was not the case so I skipped. I also put an order for a "london patter 55#" but I think there's a mistake in the ad so I had it shipped to store in case I need to return. This one's 50$ but images show a 25# and one reviewer noted model number matched a completely different item though I don't think reviewer purchased?.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/VEVOR-Cast-Iron-Anvil-55Lbs-Blacksmith-Workshop-Vise/5014704499 <careful w/this one. The one pictured is a 25# cast steel despite the description so I'm taking a chance but having it shipped to store in case the mistake is not in my favor.

edit: the one above was indeed a 25#er despite the ad so I returned it. Not bad for a london pattern cast steel though.
