VFD Help Needed - Wood Lathe

I bought this lathe many years ago and ran fine until lately. There were a few times when the lathe was slow to respond but one evening there was a pop and my lathe stopped. It tripped my 100 amp sub panel knocking out my whole shop. Now the lathe doesnt work.

It is a three phase motor that uses an ABB ACS101-2K1-1 VFD. there is a simple control unit to run the lathe (on/off, speed control and reverse).

My limited troubleshooting - I get power to the switch and to the VFD...but nothing works. Not sure how to reset the VFD, is it dead? or is the motor dead. I'm not sure of my next steps or even who to contact.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

If the vfd isn't "powering up" showing anything on the display, I will venture a guess that the "pop" you heard (if it came from the vfd) was the DC bus capacitor. If so, it's dead Jim. Maybe snap some pictures of it will help jog someone's memory.

Does the screen on the VFD turn on?

Do the diagnostic LEDs turn on?

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can reset the VFD. But it looks like it needs a control panel which I dont have. and probably need to program any new ACS VFD. might be worth the investment.

You can likely buy a replacement VFD for less than $200 that will do everything your old one did, and probably more.

Usually a pop and a dead short on the input mains is not a good thing. I would be in the camp that the VFD is toast. Armed with specs on the motor one can usually get a replacement model. Then its just a matter of reconfiguring the start/stop circuit and the speed reference.

Since you've reset the main breaker and the lathe breaker wasn't tripped i agree with matt i. If it was tripped and you already powered it up the dead short blew itself apart. Have a multi meter ohm out vfd and disconnect wires from motor check it also. Check phase to phase and to ground.

Just replace it with something cheaper and easier to configure. ABB drives are spendy and difficult to commission.
