Doing some work at the Boss's house, and he asked me to sell a Delta dust collector he has had for years. It has never been connected as its a 3ph motor, and he doesn't have 3ph power. What is the best way to convert single to 3 phase? It doesn't need speed control, just on and off.

Also program the VFD for ramped start and stop. Not hard to do and it will save on inrush current and generally make the sounds more tolerable.

Heartily agree with the guys above. Unless he's planning to run an entire shop on three phase, there's no reason to go the rotary-phase-converter route. That's a lot more equipment to deal with. A properly sized VFD will do just what you need.

One drawback to a VFD is it needs to be programmed.....that can be a bit tricky........
For this application most of the information will be a direct read of the motor nameplate.

Ramp rates aren't too concerning, 5 second accel/decel is fine.

If you are selling it why do you need to get anything ? Sell it as is. You will probably get just about as much anyway.

He didn't think it could be made operational since it was 3 ph.

I will check out Automation Direct.
Before contacting them. find out what HP, voltage and amps that motor requires. If an industrial model you might find it cheaper to buy a new motor.

Are you doing this just to sell it? The post is a little confusing. Or did he want to sell it but now wants to get it running?

If just selling, I would sell it as is and skip the Vfd project. Your extra expense and effort won't pay back

As for buying a Vfd, wolf automation is another good source and Teco is a good brand

A Vfd will be significantly cheaper than a rotary phase converter, but does have the programming "issue", as noted
