I recently acquired this anvil/vice, Just wondering if anyone has seen one before or could tell me anything about it? I'm looking to get started in blacksmithing and this was the first ASO that came my way.
Any info is much appreciated.

Moses: we have a huge vise thread you should also post your old vise on because i can't say i've seen that version of a vise/anvil yet. usually they are broken and not a good anvil, but they are old and have the COOL LOOK. here's a link to make it easier for you.

usually the U bolt is a fix for a break so is the jaw broken or cracked where the top of the U bolt is?

also welcome to the forum

That is as need as bug ****, I would love to have that one. I have never seen one like that before.
I agree with Drives, the u bolt is normally for a repair.
Has it been broken?

Thanks, I'll be sure to post some pictures over there. Nothing looks broken to me, I'll see if i can pull the U bolt off and see if anything is loose.

So it has been broken as you suspected, I bet someone was hammering on it a bit much.

Think it could be welded back together?

Welding on cast iron is exceedingly difficult to do well. Is it possible, with the right prep/preheat/rod? Sure. Can you just clean it up and MIG it together and expect it to work? No.

Moses: as i mentioned these vises couldn't take much abuse and most users in the early 1900's and late 1800's used BFH's on these. Probably because they looked a little like a Blacksmith vise which could be beat on. i'd put the U bolt back on it and use it for light duty like it was meant to be maybe after spiffing it up a bit. It's still a cool looking vise.

Brazing would be the preferred fix, but not easy and no guarantees that it will work in that spot that can get quite a bit of pressure.

I would like to have this vice very much if it becomes avail. I would repair/restore and use the heck out of it.

Makes no difference to me. Id give it a good home and give the OP enough to buy a much better suited vice for what he is trying to do.

1930,
If your serious about that shoot me a pm, getting it to florida might be cost prohibitive though.
