i looked in the local farm supply store last weekend. the regular visegrips they had on the shelf were us made but the specialty visegrips were like the sheet metal tool and welding clamps were imported.

All of the vise grips that I saw at Sears today (the actual Vise-Grip brand) are labeled Made in USA....

Nope... only Made in USA....
I just returned a set of 7" vise grips with a stretched spring, that would not stay in place. They were replaced under warranty, but with a set that replaced them no longer has "made in the USA" stamped into the tool. The package only said "made in the USA with global components". That *****.

The ones that say "made in USA" are older stock. The last HD and Lowes I've been to had "with global components" versions, Sears has "USA." That makes sense though - who goes to Sears for vise grips?

Thank goodness that USA made Vise-Grips last so long.
The flea markets I go to are full of them (Old USA Made ones) and I don't think I have ever paid more than $5 for one or bought one new. So I pretty much have all that I need. We'll see how long these imported ones last...

I was going to ask that they just give me the spring and I would keep the old ones, but they were busy and I didn't want to cause confusion.
It is just the reality of being in a global economy. Business are suppose to maximize their profit. Unfortunately, for us, labor cost is high. It is just one of many variables why we outsource everything. If there is a huge market for higher quality tools, then all HD, Lowes, Ace, Walmart, etc. will be selling them. Crappy tools sold in some auto parts stores will be sitting on the shelf and they will not be ordering more stocks. The fact that they still sell those crappy tools for years and years means they are moving them. AND, there still no mad rush of people buying a Snap-On franchaise/truck and be a quality tool dealer. Snap-On remains a small nitch market.
We heard it all before, no sense debating this all over again.
BTW, I recently neeeded ONE flare nut wrench and did not want to buy a whole set. I checked out the one sold at a local auto part store. The hex shape hole is not even punched center to the outer shape of the wrench! The two tips of the wrench opening were not even and one side did not even grab the corner of the flair nut. PLUS, it spreads as I turn the nut. Returned it. I cannot even use it once. It has the potential to make my small project very big.

At our local Princess Auto Store (similar to HF in the USA) they will replace items, no questions asked. At the same time I brought a set of 8" digital calipers with me that had not worked in 5 years(couldn't throw away) and I inquired as to to the warranty and they said , lifetime. I walked out with a new pair of vise grips and digital caliper.
