Vise indentfy

There is a local auction that has this vise listed for bidding tomorrow night. All I can make out the the letters on. I would assume this is a Wilton.

Maybe someone could shed some light on the value by looking at this picture. I need a vise in my shop but don't have a clue what to bid.

I tried to see if I could view it in person but so far no luck. Thanks for any tips on this. It looks vintage.

Looks like a Reed to me, certainly not a Wilton. I think what you are see is "No." and not the "....on" of a Wilton. Possibly a No. 104?

Re: Vise indentfy

You may be right. Looks in good condition just from what I can see in the picture. I am heading up that way now. The auction place is within walking distance of my shop so maybe I can get someone to let me view it. I need a good US vise in my shop and not sure if anyone that attends these auctions know the value of these old relics. I am not even sure myself but I would think at least $50 ? if nothing is broke. Jaws at least look better than mine. I

Assuming it is a Reed and nothing is broken or repaired, its worth at least $50, if not $100. That is the older style with the large meatball style handle. Very well made vises. You couldn't buy anything new from a store for $100 that would come close to the quality of that one.

With that shape it could be a Reed, Hollands, or Yost. All appear to have been made in the same foundry with the only differences being the lettering. On the later versions the Reeds had a split collar and adjustable nut stop (both patented features) that the others lacked. All are quality vises worth having!

I agree with the others - this one is a Reed or Yost.

Didn't anybody look at the tape measure? The slide is 24" long from nose to tail. That's almost certainly a 5" (or bigger) vise, not 4" or 4-1/2". $100 would be a bargain price but don't be surprised if it sells for much more.

Good eye, certainly larger than what a 104 would be.

My Reed 204 is 17 inches long.

A big Reed in such seemingly good condition is worth more than $100

Re: Vise indentfy

I am planning on attending the auction. They charge a 10 % buyer fee but if I can get it for under a $100 I will buy it. Problem with these auctions that most of the time there are people who run the bids up. This auction it across the road from my shop and the parking lot is always crowded on Saturday night. I just never took the time to go even though I have sold lots of things there . Forty years ago when I did attend auctions I would have some spirits in me and buy most anything. I have not touched the stuff since then but I am sure there will be a few like OLD me there

You’re right about “auction fever”. All it takes is 2 guys wanting the same thing and bidding turns into a ******* match.

If you plan to use it and a big beefy 100 pound+ vise is the right size for you, I would prepare to go higher than $100. Unless money is really tight for you, I wouldn’t hesitate to keep bidding a bit past $100. It is said that you can always get more money but those classic top shelf quality vises aren’t being made anymore and there is a dwindling supply to be had.

As was said earlier, you can’t touch the quality of Old Reeds in today’s (new vise) market for anything remotely close to 1,2,3 hundred or more.
Check out retail prices for the new Reed (made by Columbian) or even Wilton C series vises.
Here is a Reed 3CA with 5 inch wide jaws weighing in at 95 pounds. (Retail $1273.00)

If you were closer, I have a used unrestored Reed 3CA or a big Yost that I would be willing to part with.

I follow a local auction here in mid Michigan and that vise would crowd close to $200.00 there. Depending on what it is and who's bidding that week it could easily go for more.

Re: Vise indentfy

Didn't even realize I misspelled vise. I have enough vices now but not vises lol
I have a Reed that is in sad shape but I still use it. The one I got is actually too big for what I do now so thats why I wanted the one I posed about plus I have a weakness

I also have a Chas Parker pipe vise that needs some attention. My little old craftsman I don't really like.
I will try and score on the one tomorrow night and report back on how much it went for.

I didn't realize they were selling at that high of a price. Wish I was closer to you but it looks like we are on opposite ends of the US. Thanks anyway. I appreciate your help on this and if I do make it to the auction I will post back my report of what this vise sold for. Tom

Probably going to be the same here. The small shops have all but went away around here but there are still plenty of people retired like me that know the value of things made in America. About a month ago there was a lady who listed one on marketplace for $20. I was too late contacting her because it sold quick. Her husband had passed away and she was almost giving things away in his shop.

Thanks, I just hope I can sit still long enough to make it to when this vise sells . There are lots of things listed.

I got busy and didn't take time to go to auction. I drove by on the way home but I was tired and dirty. I planned on going back but once I got in my recliner I couldn't get up.
Oh well I will try and find out how much the vise brought. I going to say it was sold for close to $200 but I am just guessing. When I find out I will post.

We’re a bit disappointed that you didn’t make it to the sale but a guy’s got to do what a guy’s got to do.
