Just wondering if anybody might be able to ID this small vice for sale in the UK? I'm looking for something small but reasonable quality and interesting to mount on top of my old (new to me) tool cart -wondering if this will fit the bill or if it's just a piece of cheap junk.

No idea, my first thought was maybe York or it looked a bit like a Swindens but its not got the logos nor is it the right colours.

I assume you are talking about putting a worktop onto the rollcab then fastening a vice to it?

I did that with mine and my biggest regret was not fixing the vice to a steel plate then fastening the plate to the section of worktop.

That way if I want to swap the vice over from the cheapo bit of machine mart **** I have fitted now I wouldn't have holes in the wrong places showing on the worktop.

Thing is that now I have several really good quality English made vice's to replace it with.

You have what appears to be a "Oxwall Hobby Vise", with what looks like the suction base missing.

Yes it'd be going on top of the cart below once it's been cleaned up. I was thinking just an offcut of solid kitchen worktop or doubling up some decent ply -not spending more than a few quid for the wood (or using what I might already have at hand).

Many thanks! Based on the suction cup info I think I can guess at the quality - I'll give it a miss and wait for something else :)

Like the cart:thumbup:

I managed to get a large section of wenge that was from a worktop sink cutout (it was a good sized Belfast sink) in a fairly posh house.
Here's mine.

One thing though, having a vice on a rollcab is quite good but as its on castors (the rollcab that is) it can get a bit wobbly when I'm hacksawing at a certain frequency.
I don't really have the space for it going anywhere else at the moment though so thats where it stays. Might put a better vice on there at some point as I've got enough of the things.

Cheers. I have a larger vice (Woden) on my workbench but just got this cart and figured it might be handy to have a small one mounted for very light work - a 3rd hand more or less. As it's a german cart I'm hoping to find something a little more european looking than a Record etc.

My actual workbench is a 3M length of 40mm oak kitchen worktop, mounted on a frame of that blue/orange industrial shelving (got loads free when our warehouse moved) - I think it'll probably outlast me :)

I had that first vise when I was a kid. while not exactly junk, it IS a VERY light duty vise intended for modelling not what I was probably doing at the time... I broke mine at the nut (silver disc on the bask, it has a sleeve cast into it and I was cranking on something larger and busted the center out)

I'd say from my experience that the nut is it's weak kink, and If I still had it I'd remake the nut out of some billet steel so it wasn't the weak link. but it is still VERY small.
